Sudden Wonder: October 2014
http://www.suddenwonder.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Friday, October 31, 2014. I think the greatest gift we can give to the people around us is to be self aware. I can learn scripture and quote from Romans better than Paul, but if I've never dug into the darkness and light of my own heart. cue the clanging bell. There are a few questions I think we should all ask ourselves:. Who has God created me to be? What are my limits? What are my areas of struggle? What are my triggers? So often we gain our self-esteem from the three questions above, what I do, my we...
Sudden Wonder: June 2014
http://www.suddenwonder.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, June 24, 2014. When I learned to ride my little motorcycle. I was in a class with a bunch of guys… and one lady. I felt a bit intimidated. So I can’t imagine how the young woman felt. We got up early on a Saturday morning, went to the “riding range” (think parking lot) and all selected a helmet and a bike. The leaders gave us some instruction and we slowly but surely began to ride. Because you can sue anyone for anything. She never came back to class. I hope she found the courage to go back to c...
Sudden Wonder: Parenting
http://www.suddenwonder.blogspot.com/2015/01/parenting.html
Wednesday, January 21, 2015. The other day, at a restaurant, the table next to me and my Dad had a young couple and a boy who was about 5. Dad and I were talking, so I only caught fragments, but the pieces sounded something like this. Dad: We’re here to eat. Not to play. Not to sing. Eat. When it’s time to eat that’s all you do, eat. Son: OK. I’m staring at you. Dad: I’ll tell you what my dad told me, “Sometimes you have to sit there and be quite.”. Son: Next time you do that, don’t squeeze so hard.
Sudden Wonder: February 2015
http://www.suddenwonder.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Wednesday, February 18, 2015. Missionaries have secrets. One of the biggest is, we hate furlough. We don't tell you, but when we're together, we talk about furlough like folks in their fifties talk about their colonoscopies. The prep can be chaos, the even't long and painful. Thousands of miles in a car with whining kids in the back seat. Different beds every night, living out of suitcases, no routine for the family. "Begging" for money and always having to smile. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I am who I a...
Sudden Wonder: When Missionaries Go Dark
http://www.suddenwonder.blogspot.com/2015/07/when-missionaries-go-dark.html
Tuesday, July 28, 2015. When Missionaries Go Dark. At the beginning of May our basement flooded. Fortunately, we caught it early and none of Marcus and Kelsie's stuff was damaged. We've had to pull up the carpet, cut out some drywall and move all the stuff to our garage. Bailing water is a 24 hour a day job, for a week after the rain stops. Before we could have a landscaper divert the water from the house, it flooded again. The landscaper came. He did the work. It flooded again. Missionaries don't write ...

Our Little Slice of Heaven: Our Little Slice of Heaven - "Grand Opening"
http://kentuckysliceofheaven.blogspot.com/2012/06/our-little-slice-of-heaven-grand.html
Our Little Slice of Heaven. Wednesday, June 27, 2012. Our Little Slice of Heaven - "Grand Opening". Now for the real start of the blog. Think of that first entry as the pre-opening and this is the grand opening that will maybe be even better. Imagine big signs, and balloons, and a little fake excitement, just the way TJ Maxx would do it. Now here’s a photo just to keep you reading. This is our horse, Rocket. He really doesn’t have anything to do with this entry, but you should keep reading anyway. Here&#...

Our Little Slice of Heaven. Saturday, February 8, 2014. Back by Popular Demand. er. a few requests. The post title makes it sound a little like the McRib… well I don’t have pickles or super processed meat on a dry bun, but I do have photos. So let’s do something fun. Let’s pretend like it hasn’t been ages since I shared a blog post, and look at some photos; unedited, super lazy, but exciting photos. Here is the Heffelfinger Homestead as she stands now. Jon picked this happy yellow color. By the time the ...

Our Little Slice of Heaven: First Day of Summer - Pools, Hotdogs, Ice Cream, & Good Samaritans
http://kentuckysliceofheaven.blogspot.com/2012/06/first-day-of-summer-pools-hotdogs-ice.html
Our Little Slice of Heaven. Wednesday, June 20, 2012. First Day of Summer - Pools, Hotdogs, Ice Cream, and Good Samaritans. Today is a great day to start a blog! Not, at all, for any of the reasons I have wanted to start a blog, but I’m writing nonetheless. I will write next time about the reasons I thought our lives might be interesting enough to blog about, but today, this will be completely unrelated…. But possibly not a complete waste of your time. I’m just being honest. Well, you know. After some &#...

Our Little Slice of Heaven: Hard Times - Shmard Times
http://kentuckysliceofheaven.blogspot.com/2012/08/hard-times-shmard-times.html
Our Little Slice of Heaven. Thursday, August 2, 2012. Hard Times - Shmard Times. This is a long one and a late one, but maybe after reading it you’ll forgive me or at least feel sorry for me (I would much prefer forgiveness). Also, I’ll tell you about “the chainsaw incident”. I’ve heard a nasty rumor that building a house can be extremely difficult on a family, what with our 1 and 4 year olds not being able to pull their weight and at least help clear a tree or two. See, we had an accepted offer on our I...

Our Little Slice of Heaven. Friday, June 29, 2012. What our dream looks like - at the moment. These photos might give you a little insight as to why we are so excited about being in Kentucky. THIS is what we found here! In these photos you’ll find two things: a lot of potential and a lot of work. This is one of the first things we saw when we first looked at the property. Our driveway now runs up the middle of this valley to the top of the hill. Mmmm-hmmm. That is the. We will have this view…. Now the on...

Our Little Slice of Heaven: March 2013
http://kentuckysliceofheaven.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html
Our Little Slice of Heaven. Friday, March 22, 2013. I am no Longer Silent. Here we are livin’ the dream on our little Slice of Heaven one year after it first became ours. So I thought I’d get things going again, but I have something I need to share with you before we get into all the good, the bad, and otherwise related to living on this land. This will NOT be my typical light-hearted ramblings. This is me doing my very best to initiate something positive from a dark past. 8220;The World suffers a lot.

i carry your heart: August 2014
http://akandatang-luke5.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
I carry your heart. I carry it in my heart). I remember that day like it was yesterday. How I cried the entire flight from Singapore to LAX and scared off the guy in the seat beside me. The eight hours at LAX, homesick and annoyed by the "Do not leave your luggage unattended" PSA. Having this wishful thought that when I landed in Indianapolis, it would be the people I just left behind in Changi Airport who would greet me. My first meal at Steak and Shake. I always thought I would return to Singapore.
i carry your heart: March 2015

I carry your heart. I carry it in my heart). Unfinished Stories #1: Auckland to Berlin (via Atlanta). Sitting in a food court downtown. Behind, the ladies are complaining about the last meeting they had to sit through. Across, the gentleman is leafing through his notes. I check Facebook for the fifth time in twelve minutes. There are no updates. So I try Google. The last update was an hour ago. At last, there is some vague update that doesn't say very much. We are still waiting. Have you met her? There a...

Drive fast and swerve a lot. In the final analysis, meditation is about changing my physical perspective in the real world. It is not about changing anything between my ears. But really, meditation is about doing the complete opposite: it’s about removing ME from the scene entirely. It’s about achieving a state in which self is set aside and the universe, free of my self, can be what it is. The important fact, though, is that self cannot remove self. No operation that is solely within the mind, or th...

Life...without her
Wednesday, August 15, 2012. Saturday, July 28, 2012. Someday I know I'm going to have a day, then a week, then a month, then a year when I don't just want to give up. Today is not that day. Monday, July 9, 2012. I opened the cabinet with the though of cooking dinner. That was as far as I got. How is it that opening a cabinet in my kitchen.our kitchen.really Mark, let's not lie to ourselves.her kitchen, can cause the walls I build around my heart to dissolve like salt in the sea?
