View from the Big Hills: Dion Fortune's Legacy

View from the Big Hills. Intermittent ramblings from the Big Hills. Wednesday, 18 April 2012. 8220;Religion must be re-stated in the new age, not because truth has changed, but because the manner of its expression has become atavistic and in consequence is not only incomprehensible but definitely leads astray a new age with a new destiny.”. Dion Fortune, War Letter No 67, 30th March 1941. Century seekers on a wide range of paths. I am afraid my Biblical knowledge has grown rusty and I cannot follow the r...

View from the Big Hills. Intermittent ramblings from the Big Hills. Sunday, 6 December 2015. From Maiya’s pen…Part Two. A few weeks ago, in Part One of this thread, I shared some of my initial thoughts about a short yet inspiring and beautiful article on the Signs of the Zodiac written by Maiya Curtis Webb and published in a 1919 edition of The Occult Review. The New Alchemy, by Ralph Shirley, the then editor of the magazine. The Cambridge Platonists, by H Stanley Redgrove. I hope you enjoy the tale.

View from the Big Hills. Intermittent ramblings from the Big Hills. Sunday, 29 April 2012. Dion Fortune and the Hibernian Adept. Heard a little bit about the mysterious Maiya Tranchell Hayes, I will now move on to Dion Fortune's "Hibernian Adept.". I first learned of Art O’Murnaghan from someone we shall call "Hestia" at a public discussion meeting in Friends Meeting House on St Martin’s Lane, London (pictured below). The meeting was one of a series of public meetings advertised in Prediction Magazine.

View from the Big Hills. Intermittent ramblings from the Big Hills. Sunday, 28 September 2014. The Flight of the Phoenix. 8220; For the egg was now red-hot, and inside it something was moving. Next moment there was a soft cracking sound; the egg burst in two, and out of it came a flame-coloured bird. It rested a moment among the flames, and as it rested there the four children could see it growing bigger and bigger under their eyes. Every mouth was a-gape, every eye a-goggle. The Phoenix and the Carpet.

View from the Big Hills. Intermittent ramblings from the Big Hills. Sunday, 29 April 2012. Dion Fortune and Maiya Tranchell Hayes. The industrious Alan Richardson has written a little about Maiya Tranchell Hayes, the first of these initiates, in his 2009 book “Aleister Crowley and Dion Fortune – the Logos and the Shakti of the Age” (Llewellyn Worldwide). Alan suggests that Maiya may have been the inspiration for the main heroine in Dion Fortune's classic novel,. The Sea Priestess,". Mabel was one of thre...

View from the Big Hills. Intermittent ramblings from the Big Hills. Thursday, 24 November 2016. A response to living in interesting times. Of July 1941, almost two years into the bloodshed and destruction of the Second World War, Dion Fortune sent out her 80. Now, in the past few months many people in the United Kingdom and the United States of America have been horrified by the apparent rise in the popularity of right wing politicians and their often hateful and self-serving views. People in Spain, ...

View from the Big Hills. Intermittent ramblings from the Big Hills. Saturday, 31 October 2015. From Maiya’s pen…Part One. The year following the end of the horrific First World War marked a pivotal time in the development of British Occultism. In 1919, Violet Mary Firth was initiated into the London A.·.O Lodge of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn. I rather suspect that at the time she had no inkling whatsoever as to how, over the subsequent two and a half decades, she would come to be. Alan very kin...

The year is 1977 and the Sex Pistols, Damned and The Clash are taking on the disco, pop and rock establishment. Bowie is across The English Channel in Berlin recording Heroes with Brian Eno.
