Hi, I just got an ESL position which is English as a Second language. I've never taught it and i don't know what to do on the first day. although i do have the qualification for it. i've mostly been in special education classes. and i think its easier than i think it is but i'm making it hard for myself by thinking about it. I have to make up my own schedule and schedule it around the other grade 6,7, and 8 teachers. any suggestions? Any suggestions for assessments for the beginning of the year? My princ...

New Column Up: teacher_oasis
http://teacher-oasis.livejournal.com/10067.html
For those following this sadly neglected community.I am writing a weekly column now and have recently posted the first essay. The column will often discuss the joys and weirdness of teaching- the first two entries cover ten lessons I've learned in ten years of teaching. Please check it out: Little But Fierce. The first column is called, "10 by 10: Ten Lessons Learned in Ten Years of Teaching- Part One.". Post a new comment. Anonymous comments are disabled in this journal. We will log you in after post.

So i have a new student and he's new to the country and does not know any enlgish. he's in the middle years 6-8. Let me clarify, he can say the alphabet and name a few objects and that's about it. Where do i start with him? Or making alphabet books? Do i read books aloud to him? I know dual language books would be helpful, but how can he respond to it if he doesn't know the words to use? Seems like a catch 22 to me. Use read aloud books on a tape casseettte? But how do i get him started on writing?

a holiday dilemma: history_teacher
http://history-teacher.livejournal.com/39972.html
Here's a question for all of you. which is better - hurrying to finish up a unit before Christmas break, or finishing after we get back, with some extra time to finish up and cover some extra stuff? I'm in my third week of long term subbing, and the teacher was (as far as I can tell) a bit behind. My 10th graders (studying US History) should have finished this unit on World War I this week, but we just started on Monday. The teacher said I should spend twelve to fifteen class days on World War I.

Aaron the peacenik (. I am particularly interested finding some good U.S. history books (colonial era through Civil War especially). There are few subjects that probably wouldn't interest me to one degree or another though, so any suggestions you have would be appreciated. Post a new comment. We will log you in after post.
