Pet birds and birding. Sunday, June 28, 2009. California has a variety of different gulls. Identifying them is further complicated by the different feather patterns exhibited by the young seagulls. California gulls are everywhere. They're at the beach, in the parking lots, they've very adaptable to human environments. This is an adult California gull. Note the white spots on the tips of his primaries. They have yellow beaks with a red spot. He looked really nice against the waves. Links to this post.

I did a search of "cockatiels" on Etsy and came across a seller that makes crochet cockatiels. Sweees sells patterns. For normal cockatiels and makes the toys upon request. I asked Sweees if it would be possible to personalize the pattern for Audrey and Conner. And yes! Here's the toy of Conner:. Here's a side view. And a side view of Conner. Sweees has some skills, huh? The back is amazing!

Pet birds and birding. Sunday, August 30, 2009. Today I was experimenting with a new lens.  The lens lets me capture images that are quite far away so I can go from this:. The double-crested cormorant is quite common where I live, which I now know thanks to my new lens.  I've seen brandt's cormorants and pelagic cormorants in Monterey, CA, but I'm partial to the double-crested cormorant because of their green eyes and hooked beak. Pet birds and birding. Sunday, November 22, 2009. If you look carefully in the trees in California, you can usually see a tiny blur of feathers in the leaves and needles. I remember the first time that I came to California, I was staring at a palm tree watching tiny birds dart in between the leaves. I bet you anything that I was looking at bushtits. Bushtits are 4 1/2 inches long. But look at that tail! There's probably only two inches of an actual bird. Bushtits eat insects and seeds. A Parrot for Keeps.

Pet birds and birding. Friday, July 31, 2009. Mormon Temple, Salt Lake City, UT. The Mormons settled in Utah in 1848.  Salt Lake City is home to the headquarters for the Church of Latter-day Saints, which is in Temple Square.  SLC is on a grid system and the center of the grid is Temple Square.  Here's a picture of the Assembly Hall, the congregation area for the church. Pet birds and birding. Saturday, October 31, 2009. The Presidio of San Francisco is a former military installation that was turned into a park in 1994. It's an excellent park for Californians because it includes water, trails for biking and jogging, and a cafe with many vegetarian options.
