A blog by Susanna King. March 24, 2015. Be careful when you walk this path. Your huge, galumphing feet cannot feel. The many tiny things they trample. An acorn is just a seed,. A small nut,. Stomp on that acorn, crack it,. And it will grow. Tenacious tendrils into the soil. Convert a clear path. Into an unyielding thicket of scrub oak. Acorns cannot choose where they land,. How or when they fall. From the mother oak. They did not willfully place themselves. So, please, tread carefully. Mind how you step.

A blog by Susanna King. June 29, 2013. Bedtime Story: The Storm Dragon. Photo by Carl Spencer. Once upon a time, there was a boy named Cole who loved storms. Whenever it began to storm outside, Cole would look up at the sky to watch the dark, drifting thunderheads. He loved the booming thunder and flashing lightning. To his amazement, the bird answered him! Cole knelt by the pool and cupped his hands. He drank and drank, until he started to feel kind of funny and tingly. He stood up and had a har...Then,...

A blog by Susanna King. July 22, 2013. Is I Is or Is I Ain't? I listened to "Neurophilosopher" Patricia Churchland on NPR's On Point today. She argued that science proves we are our brains, and nothing more. There is no self, no consciousness, no soul. I don't know who peed in her Cheerios, but she delivered this news with the sort of glee the Grinch displayed as he waited for the Whos to all cry "Boo-hoo! If the illusion of existence stops being enjoyable, why not end it? I don't need to consider the fe...

Free Ideas: When Taking Is Giving

A blog by Susanna King. February 17, 2015. When Taking Is Giving. What can I give you for your birthday? Oh, nothing, please! I already have everything I need.". Simplicity is serenity. I want to get rid of the things I don't need, but I become overwhelmed trying to sort through it all. I make periodic trips to Goodwill. I shred, trash, recycle and consign, but still it seems that there's always more stuff lurking in the corners of my home. Finding treasures in my closets and attic. What a nice purse!

A blog by Susanna King. January 1, 2014. 2014 New Year's Resolutions. I'm not going to bother linking to last year's New Year's resolution post, because I didn't keep a single one of them. On to bigger and better things! Resolution #1: Lose 15 pounds. Back when I weighed 15 lbs. less, I didn't have this problem. So I'm hoping that if I lose the weight, I will also solve my pants problem. In the meantime, I'm going to wear more dresses and skirts. If music be the food of love, play on, for at least. A few...

A blog by Susanna King. September 25, 2014. Poem: Saw Her in Line at the Coffee Shop. Red, red, red. Lips like a stoplight. To her dark eyes blackened darker. Than her inky hair. She glowed like a neon light,. Filled that corner of the coffee shop. The look on her face,. The posture of her. Exquisitely dressed body,. Said, "Ignore me. Pretend I'm not here.". She shrunk inside herself,. Hiding from those barefaced girls. Sipping lattes in sneakers and sweats:. A wilting hothouse rose among the daisies.

A blog by Susanna King. December 4, 2014. Created from photos by Andrew J. Cosgriff. She is a fallen star,. Forced from the heavens,. I did not see where she fell. Cold, green mountain hollows. And bleak fields of asphalt. At fortresses of marble,. Concrete, and paper. No one, not one, has seen. My bright little star. I will keep searching. I cannot give up;. Like a star in my chest. Someday I will find her. No star can fall. Without a trace,. Wherever it lands,. A fallen star must shine:.
