I'm Fiona Buckmaster. During the first half of 2012 I spent five months as a volunteer, teaching science at the Victory Assemblies of God International School (VAGIS) in Akim Achiase in Ghana. Like the vast majority of schools in Ghana, VAGIS is a privately run church school. Schooling in Ghana is underfunded, with a reliance on 'talk and chalk' in large class groups, text books only for teachers, and no practical aids whatsoever. Teachers are poorly paid and it is often not seen as a lifelong career.
