It is sometimes good for residents, young neurosurgeons and even senior neurosurgeons to have external mentors to discuss matters openly and in confidence. The discussions may be related to clinical work, career advice, academic/research, departmental politics, wider politics, work-life balancing life, etc. However, some times it is particularly good to have mentors in another unit or another country.
