Sunday, October 04, 2009. Rights of Admission Reserved. Middle India's horror of the prospect of having to be admitted to a government hospital is probably equaled only by the prospect of having to apply for a driver's license, buying a house and having the servant not turning up for work because her kid is sick. Why let the rickshawwalla monopolise the GHs? Of getting a smile from the cute nurse? A decent wash from the wardboy without missing a spot? Http:/ www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/oct/...We don't ...

Surprised By Sin: Holding a mirror to yourself - Slumdog

http://www.surprisedbysin.blogspot.com/2009/02/holding-mirror-to-yourself-slumdog.html

Saturday, February 21, 2009. Holding a mirror to yourself - Slumdog. The NYT tries to understand why we Indians hate Slumdog. To be honest, I didn’t think it was a great movie as far as Oscar nominated ones go. Considering the stilted english (as opposed to accented), the bad acting by the lead etc. But I did think it was an honest and plausible portrayal of the situation surrounding the characters. Romanticisation of poverty to hide guilt? And just when Advani is launching his web2.0 initiative?

Wednesday, October 08, 2008. More on the Fourth Estate. Just saw Good Night, And Good Luck. Now this is a movie that has to be, HAS to be shown to every graduating media person. I was impressed by Murrows statements here and there during the movie, irrespective of whether he really did say them or not or if he did, if he did so so eloquently. One of them that particularly impressed me was. The US has had a maturing television broadcasting industry for more than 6 decades now and provides the potential fo...

Thursday, March 05, 2009. Untouchable women enjoy a night of fashion. Http:/ cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/03/untouchable-women-enjoy-a-night-of-fashion/#comment-336791. Why the hell wasn't this reported in Indian media? Because the indian media is more concerned with suppressing the acknowledgement of the existence and treatment of dalits than in bringing it to light. Why? A run through of the NRI demonstrations on the 2006 reservations issue. An IIT defending its reticence to reservations. An IIT ...

Surprised By Sin: When sharing is stealing... but is it?

http://www.surprisedbysin.blogspot.com/2009/08/when-sharing-is-stealing-but-is-it.html

Saturday, August 01, 2009. When sharing is stealing. but is it? The problem is both Joel and the RIAA have a point. Joel might not have made money from the music he shared but he did deny whatever few cents that the artist might've gotten from a CD/Download that was bought legally. What raises everyone's hackles is obviously the immensely disproportionate damages and harassment that Joel and his like are being subject to. 4 It would've been so easy to mail Joel a reasonable bill for a few hundred $s, a b...

Surprised By Sin: Burn the house to roast the pig?

http://www.surprisedbysin.blogspot.com/2009/03/burn-house-to-catch-thief.html

Saturday, March 21, 2009. Burn the house to roast the pig? And the US Govt. spurred by general outrage, again does exactly the wrong thing. Http:/ www.nytimes.com/2009/03/20/business/20bailout.html? Why would you amend the Tax code to do this? The tax code has nothing to do with this and has to be constantly simplified and not added to. The tax code should be relooked at only to reflect socio-economic changes and not political ones. Its a socio-economic tool and not a political tool. Http:/ www.nytim...

Surprised by Simple | Discovering a Biblical Basis for Disciple Making Movements

One of the interesting things about humans is that we have lots of ways to communicate. The words we use are only part of our communication system. We can change the meaning of what we say with our tone of voice and/or our body language. But, once we commit ourselves …. February 26, 2015. Leadership 1a: What is Leadership? Who is a leader? Surprised By Sin | Just another WordPress.com weblog

Just another WordPress.com weblog. June 19, 2007. Well it started off quite nicely too… I was asked to write up something on the “freedom of expression” side of the debate on banning SMS/Insta polls. And I did. And true to type I didn’t believe a word of what I said 😀 Anybody with half a brain could pick a million holes in my 500 word article 😀. I wasn’t going to give up my first shot at getting my voice heard in a reasonably famous newspaper 😀. The article in the Pioneer. And click “Edits&#8221...

Surprised by Soy | words worth eating

February 3, 2009 by Victoria. Forget miracle ingredients. Lose the fancy techniques. Heck, toss out the extra-special gadgets. I’ve realized that the best way to make any meal taste better is to add great company. The best dinner guests, whether they be family, friends, or complete strangers, turn a mediocre meal into an enjoyable event and elevate a great meal to the sublime. Look, Pa, I can cut my own fruit! And second, it’s just getting lonely to eat by myself. Most importantly, the pleasure of cookin...

A little wine for remembrance . . . a little water for the dust. William J. McCloskey, 1889. 12” x 16”. Amon Carter Museum, Ft. Worth, TX. Links to this post. Labels: William J. McCloskey. On first looking into Chapman's Homer. In recent weeks I have been sorting through Pierre MacKay. S boxes and drawers and shelves and desks. The last project so far was the heavy glass-fronted bookcase beside his bed full of, he said, his father's poetry books. Most of these were late 19. Century and early 20. I us'de ...
