I was born in London, UK, and studied physics at Nottingham then Bristol universities. After completing my MSc and PhD I continued in materials science research at Bristol for about 10 years. In 1986 I moved to Italy, where I worked as a science journalist, and also as a science writer/editor and translator for a newly established UN science centre in Trieste. I was also a freelance translator. My interests include poetry, languages, travel, sports, bridge, Russian culture, and anything to do with water.
