Susan Graber grew up in Connecticut, met her husband at George Washington University, in DC, and almost immediately moved to Beaufort, South Carolina. She taught math in a rural junior high, then spent two decades working as a real estate paralegal in her husband’s office. In the early 1990s she left her job to devote herself full-time to painting. Graber works from her Shed, a storage shed-turned-studio next to her home in Port Royal, SC, and in her loft at the Eclipse Mill in North Adams, MA.

My portraits are oil on linen. They depict the subject life size, and the view is generally three-quarter figure, or perhaps full figure in the case of a child. My goal is to paint a powerful portrait, and also to make a good painting. My goal is to complete the painting in two months. It may take longer. Oil and Pastel Paintings. I enjoy painting on location (en plein air), and many of the works represented on this site were completed just about entirely while in front of the landscape.
