Susan's In the Garden: It's apple harvest time!

http://susansinthegarden.blogspot.com/2014/10/its-apple-harvest-time.html

It's apple harvest time! This is one of my favorite times of year because we are starting to harvest our organically-grown apples. So far, we've picked the McIntosh and Gravenstein apples. Next will be the Jonagolds and finally, the Fujis. I'll admit the apples don't look very impressive, sitting in the buckets above ( click on the photo to see what I mean. But that's because the apples were sprayed in the spring with kaolin clay, a natural substance that helps keep the codling moths away from the apples.

Susan's In the Garden: Garden Party

http://susansinthegarden.blogspot.com/2015/07/garden-party.html

This time of year, the Associated Garden Clubs of Spokane. Ordinarily host a tour of several beautiful gardens in the Spokane area. What with the nasty heat spell and drought we've been having, they decided to hold a Garden Party. Instead and YOU are invited! It will take place at 601 W. Bradford Ct. on Sunday, Aug. 2nd from 10:30 am to 3 pm In this beautiful garden setting, there will be refreshments and the opportunity to visit with fellow gardeners. He is an amazing gardener!

http://susansinthegarden.blogspot.com/2015/08/august-2-column.html

Here is a link to my column in today's edition of The Spokesman-Review: Enjoying the harvest means knowing the signs. This one is a guide to knowing when to harvest veggies. While that might sound easy, it can be confusing to beginning and seasoned gardeners alike. In my column, I wrote about some of the most commonly grown vegetables. I hope you'll find it interesting. Do you have any tips on harvesting veggies?

Susan's In the Garden: Cherries and birds

http://susansinthegarden.blogspot.com/2013/07/cherries-and-birds.html

As you know, birds absolutely love to eat cherries. We have a few cherry trees in our little orchard and every year, it's a battle to keep them from robbing our harvest. This year, we decided to use an organic spray containing Spinosad, called Bull's-Eye Bioinsecticide from Gardens Alive. But there still was the bird issue. Bill got some bird scare flash tape from Ed Hume Seeds. And tied short strips of it onto twine that hangs on either side of one of our pie cherry trees (you can click on the above pho...

Susan's In the Garden: Keeping the birds out of the cherries

http://susansinthegarden.blogspot.com/2014/06/keeping-birds-out-of-cherries.html

Keeping the birds out of the cherries. Don't you just love fresh cherries this time of year? I'm crazy about them but, unfortunately, so are the robins, magpies, starlings and sparrows. We have 5 cherry trees and it's a battle to get any amount of fruit off of them. A couple of years ago, we tried an experiment of covering the trees. Last year, we used narrow mylar flash tape to try to scare the birds. Well, this year, I found a 2-inch-wide holographic bird scare ribbon. We have hung strips of the bird s...
