Scrubbed Up Student: Guilty until proven innocent.
http://scrubbedupstudent.blogspot.com/2011/01/guilty-until-proven-innocent.html
Sunday, 2 January 2011. Guilty until proven innocent. Over the past few days the man arrested (and now released) for the terrible murder of Joanna Yeates has suffered from a massive and coordinated character assassination from all angles of the UK press. Since his name was released journalists have been dying to get their hands on any interesting oddities from his past, in order to paint him as an oddball outsider and thus fit their frame. The point is well made in the Telegraph here. 101 Things To Do.

Scrubbed Up Student: Death Penalty Debate
http://scrubbedupstudent.blogspot.com/2011/08/death-penalty-debate.html
Wednesday, 3 August 2011. Some people seem to think that even engaging in the debate around the death penalty restarted by the frankly reprehensible Paul Staines is playing into his hands, but I think it's worth reopening from time to time to remind ourselves just why it is so wrong and why its reintroduction has so consistently been voted down. You will not kill. How does it say it? As for the argument that murderers have forgone their human rights, I disagree entirely. Either human rights are non-n...

Scrubbed Up Student: Shoddy Mail Journalism
http://scrubbedupstudent.blogspot.com/2011/07/shoddy-mail-journalism.html
Thursday, 21 July 2011. I have used the title of 'shoddy' journalism for the Mail, as I struggled to think of a more apt word, but I hope you agree that their front page today goes beyond shoddy, and in my eyes should be illegal. The Mail appears not to have heard of the presumption of 'Innocent until proven guilty'. It may or may not turn out to be the case that this nurse was in fact responsible for the deaths of patients. It is the exact same kind of disgusting journalism I commented on. Im sure many ...

Scrubbed Up Student: Save Our NHS
http://scrubbedupstudent.blogspot.com/p/save-our-nhs.html
The NHS will last as long as there are folk left with the faith to fight for it." - Nye Bevan, architect of the NHS. Will lead to the marketisation of the NHS, we have to let him know we don't want a US-style market in Health Care, which picks which illnesses to treat based on which are most lucrative and leaves our NHS trying to scrape together funds to treat the elderly and long-term ill. Sign the petition, and join the BMA, the RCN, the RCGP and the Kings Fund in opposing this demolition. No-one menti...

Scrubbed Up Student: Vigilante Journalism
http://scrubbedupstudent.blogspot.com/2011/07/vigilante-journalism.html
Sunday, 10 July 2011. I seem to have written a lot on both this blog and Twitter recently about the media, but in my defence it has been one of the biggest media scandal's of a generation. I just want to post once more on this, the last day of the News of the World. A lot has been written about how the News of the World closing will be a loss to journalism. On one issue, a great deal of people seem keen to praise News of the World, the naming and shaming. No-one is going to condone paedophilia, but when ...

Tuesday, 19 April 2011. Lies, half-truths and dodgy statistics: NHS. Part of a series on the many lies and exaggerations used by politicians and the media which are backed up by very questionable statistics. There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics." So goes the quote popularised by Mark Twain, his phrase describing just how easy it is to twist any statistic. Issued by Number 10 and are reproduced by the Department of Health, entitled 'Working together for a stronger NHS'. The...

Scrubbed Up Student: Dissecting the Dissection Room
http://scrubbedupstudent.blogspot.com/2010/04/dissecting-dissection-room.html
Wednesday, 14 April 2010. Dissecting the Dissection Room. The thing people are most interested if you talk about university seems to be one room more than all the others put together. The dissecting room. Before I got to Manchester I've got to admit, it did seem by far the most interesting, I was kind of wondering how I'd handle it as well. I've never been squeamish but this was a whole other level to watching Saw. You can instantly gross out any non-medic with stories from the dissection room. I got the...

Scrubbed Up Student: My Causes
http://scrubbedupstudent.blogspot.com/p/causes.html
Free, Effective Health Care. I'm a centre-left Labour member, so any stories in praise of progressive initiatives or, alternatively, opposing regressive policy will be put here. Key topics will include calling for an end to senseless drug prohibition which fuels criminal gangs, supporting the campaign for fairer votes, and opposing the appalling damage being done to the hopes of young people after the tuition fees were trebled without any mandate. If ever I were to give an example of how two different th...

Scrubbed Up Student: 01/08/11 - 01/09/11
http://scrubbedupstudent.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 9 August 2011. I've been just as appalled as anyone by what has happened in London, and now seems to be spreading across the UK. What may have started up after the flaring of a peaceful protest against the police has now turned into something in no way related to the initial spark. People are having their homes burnt to the ground, the shops which are their livelihood ripped apart, and their communities destroyed. It's sickening. I was impressed by Dr. Clifford Stott. It may seem an easy answer ...
