Writing progs to achieve questionable ends. Hakar at the Gate. I was reading the paper while eating lunch. There was an ad for something titled "Hackers @ the Gate" near the back page of my paper. Not sure what that title even means. There were two featured speakers shown in the ad. One of them was Arati Prabhakar. Umm, is Hakar her real last name? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Writing progs to achieve questionable ends. Choices of Edward Snowden. Every day I am hearing more details about Edward Snowden. He is the whistleblower that leaked information about the NSA spying on US citizens. Snowden previously worked for the CIA as a security guard. He most recently was employer by Booz Allen Hamilton. Why did this guy do this? The real question is what is going to happen to the spy programs set up by the NSA? Perhaps we have always been there, and Americans just want to ignore it ...

All Things Blogger: September 2011
http://blog-chief.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
It is always nice to see new bloggers entering the blogosphere. Today I checked out a tutorial by Chase. Gale His layout is nice looking. I especially like how he tags the code to distinguish it and make it easier to read. I recall back when I started blogging. I thought I was ready to take over the world. Blogging has helped me establish my voice online. Now I am not a Dot Net. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). TortoiseSVN for the new Project. Performance Tricks in Other Databases.

All Things Blogger: November 2011
http://blog-chief.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Just read a post about a guy trying to decide upon a blogging platform. He passed over Blogger due to a lack of control. Ummm okay. He tried out Wordpress but gave that up too. He ended up choosing Jekyll. I am all down for putting power in the hands of the blogging. However easy of blogging is tops for me. I should not have to pull teeth just to get out a blog post. No thanks Jekyll. Blogger is fine for me. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). TortoiseSVN for the new Project. Performance Tricks in Other Databases.

I saw a flowchart on how Google search actually works. It was quite involved. Let me share some of the highlights. To start with, there are Google bots out there crawling web content. They follow links on the pages they find. Google then indexes the page titles and content that the bots crawl. For sharing the info. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). TortoiseSVN for the new Project. All Things Blogger: Feedback Fail
http://blog-chief.blogspot.com/2012/01/feedback-fail.html
I read a post about a site that blew up in terms of visitors because it was on a popular site. The developer had to deal with an overwhelming number of new visitors. One of the pains was the form submission. I never heard of the site. When I visited it, I saw a contact form on the bottom of the page. However there was verbage that the contact form results were ignored. In fact, the form did not submit anything anywhere. Can you say fail? TortoiseSVN for the new Project. Government Contracting: July 2010
http://government-contracting.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html
The wide world of govenment contracting. Specifically the practice of the government putting large companies under contract to do software development and maintenance. Our project at work is at a critical juncture. We are in the last option year of the contract. That means that there will be a recompete. Or should I jump ship and stay with the project? I have chosen option two a number of times for this project. If the past is any indicator, I will have to make that jump. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Theory of Fixing Code: Tool Upgrade
http://code-theory.blogspot.com/2012/07/tool-upgrade.html
Theory of Fixing Code. Patterns of Software Maintenance. We upgraded almost all our development tools in this latest change cycle. This is nice for developers. We like to use recent versions of the toolsets. This is a nightmare for developers. When you change multiple tools at once, it is hard to identify which change was the cause for any given bug. Next we had some pain from Visual Studio. Installing the runtimes was not as simple as dropping some DLLs in our application directory. Turns out we...The t...

Theory of Fixing Code: June 2009
http://code-theory.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Theory of Fixing Code. Patterns of Software Maintenance. I read an article on the web by Rob Pike. He is an important guy in the UNIX/C world. I know I own at least one UNIX text authored by him. For some reason, I thought he was also one of the authors of the awk. Scripting language. However that does not seem to make sense as the letters in awk. Are supposed to represent the first letter of the last names of the three guys who invented the language. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I have been working exclu...

Writing progs to achieve questionable ends. I read an interesting article by Raphael Mudge, creator of Cobalt Strike. He explains how one could download the Cobalt Strike program and crack it. You can inject your own evil code into the install. Then you can post your results up on some site as a cracked version. Read all the details on his blog. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
