Let’s Salsa! | sustainable soapbox

Laquo; Double Fudge Brownies. September 8, 2009 by bloom. We are overwhelmed with tomatoes. In fact, I am going to hit my friend Nikki. Up tomorrow for her pressure cooker. Time to get busy canning! I was hoping for this moment. Wes is excited to create bloody mary mix and I am anxious to stock up on marinara sauce for winter. Even if our experience ends in one jar of sauce, a messy kitchen and perhaps a few stiff drinks, it will be just that, an experience. We have exceeded our expectations. She found t...

Laquo; Tea Inspired Sweetness. Starting down a new path. November 9, 2009 by bloom. My father passed away on Saturday right around dinnertime. I was standing in my kitchen when the phone rang. With caller ID, you now have a number on a screen that triggers the first emotion, before it would have been the sound of a voice, the first “Hello” that gives evidence to the caller…the tone of the person’s voice. I tightened and answered the phone. My father was able to do that. He went peacefully with my mom...

Laquo; Let’s Salsa! September 9, 2009 by bloom. And in between all that (I really do house excess energy, don’t I? I will be running the Twin Cities Marathon on Sunday with my dear sister-in-law. It was an agreement made during a brief moment of insanity. I swore I would never train for another marathon. Surprisingly, I am very excited and I feel my training has gone better than expected. I think I practically read most of the book out loud to my sleepy husband in bed. That’s when I watched my husb...
Delicata Squash Dip | sustainable soapbox
https://sustainablesoapbox.wordpress.com/2009/12/13/delicata-squash-dip
Laquo; Starting down a new path. December 13, 2009 by bloom. I received this recipe from my Keewaydin Farms. So, what is Delicate Squash? Living up to their name, these squash have thinner skins than most winter squash, and because they’re smaller overall, they cook faster. Can’t wait? Slice a delicata squash up for faster cooking; you can even eat the roasted skins (taken from the winter squash glossary. More helpful vegetable tips for those living in Wisconsin can be found at Wisconsin Fresh Produce.

a little of this: NYT biscuits
http://nkdolin.blogspot.com/2011/07/nyt-biscuits.html
Saturday, July 23, 2011. I do have whole milk though (at least until Shayna turns 2). Anyway, they came out great. There is a 30 minute resting time, which sucks a little bit. And I think my other recipe calls for more butter or salt or something cause it's just a little bit yummier. But not so yummy that you should keep buttermilk in your fridge. Before developing an allergy to dairy, I used to keep dehydrated buttermilk powder in my refrigerator. Check it out; you might like it. Saturday, July 23, 2011.
a little of this: Ancho Chili Shrimp or Chicken Street Tacos
http://nkdolin.blogspot.com/2011/06/ancho-chili-shrimp-or-chicken-street.html
Wednesday, June 08, 2011. Ancho Chili Shrimp or Chicken Street Tacos. In all the cooking I did last week, this was the best. It was so yummy! The idea came from Cooking Light but I had to make a number of changes. Ron doesn't eat shrimp and I don't eat chicken (it's real fun at mealtime in our house). Ancho Chili Shrimp or Chicken Street Tacos. Chicken tenderloins, cut into bite sized pieces. Shrimp, (I used frozen which I defrosted under cool water for a few minutes and took off their shells/tails).
a little of this: Custom Dog Quilt
http://nkdolin.blogspot.com/2011/05/custom-dog-quilt.html
Wednesday, May 25, 2011. Well it sure has been a long time since I finished a quilt, hasn't it? This one was a custom order- my sister-in-law requested a primary colored dog quilt for my nephew. He happens to be 6 months old already so you can imagine how long I've been stalling on this one! It feels great to have this project wrapped up. A huge weight is lifted off my shoulders. Now I'm working on little clothing projects for the kids and designing a big big big project for my brother's wedding! In the ...

sustainable soapbox
December 13, 2009 by bloom. I received this recipe from my Keewaydin Farms. CSA newsletter. It is very simple to prepare. Literally you roast the squash, scoop the flesh, mix the cheese, cream and spices and there you have it: a rich creamy dip to accompany the simplest of suppers to the most extravagant occasions. I more often than not, served it right back in the squash “boat” surrounded by an assortment of crudite and crackers. It makes for a stunning presentation. So, what is Delicate Squash? And roa...
