penny-wise people: November 2009
http://pennywisepeople.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Monday, November 30, 2009. I've come across several articles about the merits of "real vs. fake" Christmas trees recently. Thought I'd share some of the info for those of you who celebrate Christmas and are wondering which is better for the world - a live tree, or a boxed one. Number of real Christmas trees sold in the US in 2008 - 28.2 million. Number of artificial trees imported into the US in 2008 (mostly from China) - 8.9 million. That one made me laugh! When Christmas is over, we always lay the tree...

Thursday, October 29, 2009. It's time to plant the garlic! Here in New England, there are from what I understand 2 approaches when it comes to planting garlic. The first is to plant it in late Fall, once it's cooled down enough outside that the garlic won't start to sprout early (you want it to wait until Spring). The other is to hold off planting until Spring, and put the garlic in as soon as the ground is workable. We split the bulbs into their individual cloves. And cover the rows, as I've read that t...
penny-wise people: March 2010
http://pennywisepeople.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 29, 2010. But what about "local chains" (like Pet Quarters, which has locations only in NH and Maine). or what they call "locally owned franchises" - Ace Hardware comes to mind. Are these to be avoided, or are they ok alternatives when a truly local, independently owned, small business alternative isn't available? I haven't quite figured that out yet. I'd like to think that I can shop exclusively at independently owned, small local stores - but is that even possible any more? I like crocuse...
penny-wise people: December 2009
http://pennywisepeople.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html
Wednesday, December 30, 2009. 2010 is right around the corner, and though I'm not really one to make a bunch of Resolutions, I do try each year to come up with a few goals for the New Year that help keep me focused on where I want to be heading. I also hope to finally pull everything together such that I can add chickens to our little world in 2010 - again, lots of work to be done first, building them a coop and a run so we can keep them safely in our yard and out of the neighbors' yards! Wednesday, Dece...
penny-wise people: monday at the farmers' market
http://pennywisepeople.blogspot.com/2010/06/monday-at-farmers-market.html
Monday, June 28, 2010. Monday at the farmers' market. Our squash and cucumber plants in the garden continue to grow and grow - but we have nothing to pick (yet! So we headed off to the Durham Farmers' Market this afternoon, where we found treats like these in abundant supply! Yellow squash, zucchini, pattypan squash, cucumbers, green squash. all good! Gardening with kids is definitely rewarding, educational, and wonderful all at the same time! June 28, 2010 at 5:32 PM. On Saturday at the Farmers market w...

penny-wise people: cucurbits gone crazy
http://pennywisepeople.blogspot.com/2010/06/cucurbits-gone-crazy.html
Thursday, June 24, 2010. I had a little trouble deciding the title of this post. Sea of Squash came to mind. Or Why I Will Never be Without Rabbits Again. But then my 7 year old said, on his way in from the back yard where he had been picking snap peas (47 snap peas to be exact - not that he was counting.), "Mom, the cucurbits are going crazy out there! Best of all, here come the baby pattypan squash - once the flowers open and are pollinated by all the bees that are flying around out there, the baby squ...

Projects and Educational Series. SEA History and in the News. Tuesday, May 21, 2013. Keystone going to vote in the House. Keystone XL likely up for vote tomorrow [1]. The health, social justice, and environmental side of the issue (though likely among the most important topics) probably won't get as far without a coherent alternative on the economic "job creation" side for those of the GOP [2]. Perhaps speaking about the risks to local economies can make a measured difference? What will we do? Http:/ www...
