Finance Officer: May 2008

Student politics is an interesting world. It has a lot of good, with people wanting to represent students and do the best for them. It also has a lot of bad. And since my last blog was very positive, I'm now going to concentrate on some of the negatives. To be clear, I'm not saying that everyone who opposed those changes did so for this reason, but I'm in no doubt that some people did. This is just one example. There are plenty more, particularly when it comes to NUS. However, student issues are politica...

Friday, 23 November 2007. My main focus this week has been the re-launch of Biteback, the Union’s self-help group for people with eating disorders. I’ve been working with Women’s Committee to run stalls in the Union all week to raise awareness of Biteback, including through handing out free fruit, recipe cards and Biteback flyers. For information on other sources of advice and support about eating disorders please check out my section of the website – (. Next semester I’m planning to run a fundrais...

Saturday, 10 November 2007. Make the Smart Move. Looking for a house can be the most exciting experience you can get at University. You snoop around other peoples houses and you decide on who you want to live with. However it can also be a journey of many pitfalls. That's why the Student Advice Centre, Welfare Committee and PropertywithUS have come to bring you the Smart Move housing campaign. One thing you should remember though: THERE ARE MORE STUDENT HOUSES THAN STUDENTS. And what are those steps?

Sheffield Students' Union President: August 2007
http://susupresident.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, 1 August 2007. Money don't make my world go round. i'm reaching out for a higher ground. Fresh out of the Dolly Parton school of philosophy, I've headed straight into the philosophical minefield that is Des'ree this week. Yesterday was payday. But it can't be said that I am in this job for the money. Plenty as it is for my needs, my overdraft is still crying out to be replenished. So if it's not about the money then how am I reaching out for a higher ground? The source is being refurbished, ag...

Sheffield Students' Union President: June 2008
http://susupresident.blogspot.com/2008_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 17 June 2008. It is with some sadness that I write this which is probably to be my last blog. I've no idea how many of you will read it but it's worth it even if it is just one of you. I have 14 days left in office as of today. It is unbelieveable how quickly time passes. It sounds cliched perhaps but I seriously cannot believe how quickly it has all gone. Someone just asked me if I've enjoyed the year and my response was as it has been to everyone who has asked that - "mostly". Firstly, John Sa...

Sheffield Students' Union President: University - Is it worth it??
http://susupresident.blogspot.com/2008/05/university-is-it-worth-it.html
Monday, 12 May 2008. University - Is it worth it? That is the question many of us are asking. Some will put forward the case for education returning to the pre-fee days of being free. Some will say that International student fees need to be regulated. Some will say that we should have an open market in Higher Education allowing institutions to charge whatever they like. Some will say that those studying for a second degree or are retraining should be given financial support to facilitate such study.
