Thursday, May 26, 2011. The Lure of the Other Worlds. Why is it whenever you say you want to start truly doing something, you may end up doing it once or twice, but then find all the excuses in the world not to continue on with it. This of course applies to many things: weight loss/lifestyle change, exercising, cleaning house (for me at least), and of course writing. Didn't I say that I'd start it up again, keep up on my blog 1-2 times a week if possible? Big Fish Games: Ahhh. the hidden object and p...

Strong Women. Strong Stories. In My Father’s Footsteps. The Craft of Writing. May 4, 2015. IT’S A BRAW, BRICHT, MOONLICHT NICHT, THE NICHT. If I’m being totally honest, there are probably places in Scotland where they really do talk like that. In fact, many years ago, when visiting Aberdeen, (150 miles from Glasgow where I lived) I struggled to figure out the nationality of the people sitting at the table next to me in the restaurant. Were they Dutch? Turns out they were Aberdonians, but with their Doric.

Strong Women. Strong Stories. In My Father’s Footsteps. In My Father’s Footsteps. In May 1940, my father, Jack Cranstoun, was one of 340,000 soldiers rescued in what became known as the Miracle of Dunkirk. Sixty-nine years later, accompanied by my good friend Anna, I travelled to France to retrace his journey to that bloodied beach. If you wish you read an account of my pilgrimage, please click here. Strong Women. Strong Stories. In My Father’s Footsteps. January 24, 2016. As an emigrant from Scotland, and with Burns Night almost upon us (January 25th), it can be all too easy to get caught up in twee images of Scotland and its music. You know what I mean – pipers marching through the glens, kilts a-swinging, belting out Scotland the Brave. And while there is definitely a place for all that, my visit back to Scotland for The Perthshire Amber Festival. What can I say apart from – What a musician! About...

Strong Women. Strong Stories. In My Father’s Footsteps. April 21, 2015. Rightly described as Edinburgh’s Best Kept Secret, Gilmerton Cove. Place to visit if you’re a fan of mysteries. Hidden beneath an unprepossessing cottage on Gilmerton’s main road, historians and archeologists still don’t know for sure when this network of secret passages was built, or even what they were used for. The entrance to Gilmerton Cove. If so, why dig a well that doesn’t reach water? Were they used by Covenanters. Only twent...
