SV Drachten is opgericht in 1992 door een handvol bevriende schutters. Begin 1993 sloot SV Drachten zich aan bij de Koninklijke Nederlandse Schutters Associatie (KNSA) en het NOC/NSF. Na een grondige opknapbeurt konden de leden van SV Drachten op woensdagmiddag terecht op de niet in gebruik zijnde schietbaan van politie Heerenveen in het bos bij Katlijk.
