September 14, 2008. Not a lot to say…. Posted by Amy under Uncategorized. Except that I am pretty swamped. I’m sure most of you are not surprised that this blog falls pretty low on my list of priorities. But since some people also use it as a way to see if I’m still alive, I should probably post just a little today. So here are some updates:. 8221; But we realized that sacrifices have taken place – there is no college marching band. Instead, the local high school band plays at our games. I have discovere...

August 28, 2008. Welcome to the family. Posted by Amy under Uncategorized. Classes don’t start until next week, but the madness has already begun. Of the many types of jobs I’ve had, academia stands alone as one that truly sucks up your life. The understanding is that it’s not a job, it’s a lifestyle. And at a small school like the one I’m starting at, one is immediately socialized into the all-consuming institution like a new family (or cult? On the one hand, it is nice to be so thoroughly welcomed....

November 10, 2008. Posted by Amy under Uncategorized. It’s that time of the semester when I can’t do much more than complain about grading, be tired and wait impatiently for finals. Instead, this is an exercise in thinking about happy things. Happy thing #1: President-elect Obama. Happy thing #2: Living in a newly blue state. Happy thing #3: Thanks to Scott, even though I’m overloaded at work, there’s still food to eat and a clean house. Okay, I feel better. November 11, 2008 at 1:34 pm. We will have to ...

October 29, 2008. Rest in Peace, Betsy. Posted by Amy under Uncategorized. My sympathies to my dear friends, Kathy and Vance, lost their dear dog Betsy to a brief illness this week. She was a sweet dog and a good girl who was afraid of thunder and liked to cuddle. She will be missed. October 26, 2008. Posted by Amy under Uncategorized. At the beginning of the race:. July 31, 2008. Posted by Amy under Uncategorized. In the meantime, I’ve been settling into Southern small town life. It’s a pretty big change from Northern big city life, only I can never be sure which changes are Southern and which are small town. I’m sure I’ll miss some things. There is one nice restaurant in town, and otherwise, it’s mostly chain restaurants near the highway. But, Richmond is only 20 minutes away, and that should be enough city for me. July 19, 2008. September 30, 2008. Posted by Amy under Food. In case you were ever in Costco and saw the one-gallon container of mayonnaise, and wondered who bought it…. That would be us. And no, we’re not planning on a party or opening a restaurant. Some of you know that Scott is a bit of a mayo-maniac (mayo-niac? We bought the 1/2 gallon size about a month ago, and it’s almost all gone. (I have made a couple batches of coleslaw, but still.) So we hope this one will last a bit longer. September 14, 2008. April 30, 2008. Things I learned this week. Posted by Amy under Food. 1 Pasta with anchovy-lemon sauce tastes okay on the first day, but makes for really vile leftovers. 2 As good as oven roasted asparagus and fingerling potatoes should taste together, the cooking times are pretty darn different. And over-roasted asparagus is not so good. On the bright side, I used Cookthink. April 29, 2008. My next great challenge. Posted by Amy under The Boat. The Captain (also known as Captain Gladiator.
