We can understand both orientalism and gender by looking at the way Western Europe has portrayed men from the 'Orient'. These ideas influenced the course of politcal History. The fact of female seclusion in Muslim countries inspired vivid fantasies among both men and women in Europe. Fantasy met reality during the colonial occupation of Muslim lands in the nineteenth century. Gender and race converged in these expressions of European axieties. Imagining the World Divided.
