Truce. | Sweeping the Garden
https://sweepingthegarden.wordpress.com/2015/03/09/truce
The current was strong, kelp laid sideways, particles flowing past the lens of my mask. It took considerable effort to stay in place, constantly kicking against a river. Visibility wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t exactly good, at least by islands standards, maxing out at roughly 25 feet. I swam beside my son, a loaded speargun in his hands. Today would be his day. I never took a shot, instead guiding him, teaching him how to stalk fish. 8220;He was too amazing” is all I can reply. This entry was posted on Marc...

Perfect Days. | Sweeping the Garden
https://sweepingthegarden.wordpress.com/2015/08/09/perfect-days
Some days seem to come and go with no lasting effect, filler days that are nothing but bridges easily burned, merely linking the days you’ll remember. Others become the building blocks of images upon which you’ll erect the memory you’ll call your life. The same afternoon and night were spent wandering Angeles high country canyons with Michael, sleeping beside a waterfall and giant cedars, woodstove illuminating faces animated with conversation. I’ve no desire to let the light of the child inside die.

cooking and running: Ozark Highlands Trail / TLD Bandoleer Review
http://runningcookingetc.blogspot.com/2011/04/ozark-highlands-trail-tld-bandoleer.html
Sunday, April 10, 2011. Ozark Highlands Trail / TLD Bandoleer Review. Last week I had the opportunity to spend a few days in the Ozarks on the Ozark Highland Trail with Eugene as well as to trail test the new TrailLite Designs Bandoleer pack. The Ozark Highlands Trail is a 165 mile trail that spans through the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas and Missouri. Our plan was to spend three days on the OHT doing an out and back style hike. The park is possibly the nicest park I have ever been to. The facilities ...

Amid the Thorns : Deadman Peaks 50 Ultramarathon (Round 2!)- Continental Divide Trail

Tuesday, November 1, 2011. Deadman Peaks 50 Ultramarathon (Round 2! Headlamp racestarts are badass. 6am and all the runners are moving. Running down from Mesa Portales into the Mile 9 Aid Station. feeling very fresh and running smoothly at this point, it would not last. Still managing to crack a smile around mile 32 despite suffering from a lengthy bout of cramps from hell. Running in the last few feet before crossing the finish line a second time. Jim Breyfogle the race director greets me warmly. I rece...
The first of many | out. living.
https://outlivingblog.wordpress.com/2014/07/28/the-first-of-many
The first of many. I always get pretty excited to show visiting friends and family the desert wasteland we live on the edge of out here. It’s a perhaps silly pride of something that’s not at all mine but that is oh-so profoundly special. The sharing last weekend was the best ever. Introducing Zazie, who’s been itching to get into the backcountry for two and a half weeks now. Walk a shockingly short distance from roads or trails, though, and it’s some of the most tranquil country around. I just returned f...
Such sexy rock | out. living.
https://outlivingblog.wordpress.com/2015/04/24/such-sexy-rock
Wild canyons are of course awesome but sometimes what’s between them is even wilder. Route planning is in one sense easier because there’s more flexibility than being restricted to a canyon but figuring out what not to miss makes it trickier and being willing to just wing it is key, even after all those hours looking at topos and sat images. I’d spent quite a bit of recent time in the area so to avoid spending time covering some of the same ground again a little cheating was in order to start. Thanks Mat...
