...beautifully burning...: January 2014

Thursday, January 9, 2014. I've got this really cute puppy- (for reference on her cuteness see pictures…you'll realize I'm not exaggerating.). Her name is Maggie and she does all sorts of adorable things. She rolls over, sits, stays, loves to cuddle, and, I swear, she understands a whole array of emotions that most humans can't even begin to comprehend. I would highly contend that she is, in fact, the most lovable dog in the world. The chicken bones and Maggie wants. Somehow Maggie usually manages to sne...

Tuesday, July 8, 2014. Small town, Midwest America is a beautiful place, quite possibly one of my favorite places in the entire world simply because it is home. In this small corner of the world, corn fields abound;. People wave to just about anyone, whether they know them or not.but chances are good they know them, since everyone knows everyone;. Your road companion is often times an Amish buggy;. Your graduating class is small enough that you usually know and have talked to everyone;. Especially at a s...

Saturday, May 3, 2014. Amazing grace, how sweet the sound. That saved a wretch like me. Spring appeared to bid us farewell as we packed up the bus and prepared to take off. The last of the girls trickled onto the bus and took their seats. For six long months I had kept our location a secret, and for all six months the team had been pushing me to spill the beans. People might voluntarily sign up to spend their spring break doing disaster relief work. But here we all were, an unlikely bunch, ready to serve.

...beautifully burning...: There is beauty here.
http://laurenkirb.blogspot.com/2015/06/there-is-beauty-here.html
Saturday, June 27, 2015. There is beauty here. The fan hums loudly above us and a constant breeze courses through the outpatient room. Papers rustle with the invisible motion, but the work of holding and pinning them down is well worth the effort. It's hot here, yet not as hot as it usually is during this time of year. Everyone says it's because God knew I was coming and wanted to give me a break, so He cooled it down. If that's the case, I owe many thanks to the Big Man. On day one I could hardly look a...

http://laurenkirb.blogspot.com/2015/07/becoming-patient-3-nights-in-indian.html
Monday, July 6, 2015. Becoming the patient: 3 nights in an Indian isolation ward. In the last four days I have been pumped with. 3 or 4 different antibiotics,. A few different antiemetics,. The generic acetaminophen and ibuprofen,. A holy ton of normal saline,. And so much more…. That’s a lot of drugs for a self proclaimed “drug free zone”, but, let me tell you, this week I am praising Jesus for modern medicine. It all started with a stomach ache. Just a little one, ya know? Manageable. No biggie. After ...

Tuesday, August 11, 2015. Reentry: the pictures I didn't take. Written about a week ago, but still as true as ever:. As I reenter American suburbia and try my hardest to not act like I'm miserably out of place and totally wrecked on the inside, I'm finding myself experiencing a little bit of reverse culture shock. I close my eyes and see the faces of fifty orphaned kids laughing and playing,. Or I see the colony girls that just wanted to hold my hands and walk,. And then I open my eyes. So, I'm fighting ...

Monday, September 2, 2013. A Faith Like Abe's. I find myself saying that a lot lately. Not in the "annoyed-taking-the-Lord's-name-in-vain" way, but rather in the quiet "oh-I-need-you","I'm-breathing-you-in", "please-hold-me-up" type of way. What's been going on lately? So much change. So many new things. New, new, new. In the midst of all this newness and change I am trying desperately to cling to the same, steadfast, holy God that I know. but even He feels different. Dare I say.stale? But on a less whin...

Saturday, March 16, 2013. Broken, but Rejoicing. Almost one year ago I walked into Loving Hearts Babies Home in Uganda, Africa. It was maybe my third or fourth day in the country and I had met my fair share of adorable and lovable babies, children, and orphans. But, I will never forget walking into Loving Hearts and laying eyes on this little man, Jonathon. Something about those big, brown eyes hit me and screamed for me to come pick him up.which, of course, I DID! And then.it was time to go. Secretly, I...

Tuesday, October 22, 2013. Praising God in the Process. 6:00 am to 11:30 pm. That's usually about the length of my day. I get ready for the day (which usually includes inordinate amounts of coffee consumption). I go to classes. I have a meeting or two, or depending on the day, I work in the office. I settle in for homework. I try not to fall asleep (most times unsuccessfully). I do some more homework. I go back to doing homework. I brush my teeth. I fall in bed. Side note: I'm thinking about contracting ...
