Sweet, Sweet, Syria. One American Family. One Refugee Family. One year in friendship. 8220;Syria is Garbage”. View story at Medium.com. When I walk up the stairs into their living room, the first thing I smell is oil heating on the stove. The first thing I hear is gunfire, followed by laughter. Syria has joined us again, on the television screen, while N (our American friend who speaks Arabic) has joined us on the couch. I’m grateful to see one of them. Should I start my homework? My 10-year old asks.

Apparently so do the 50 other people in the waiting room. At the desk, K points to a clipboard and hands me a pen. So I sign his children in, as I’ve signed my own in at so many other doctors’ offices (first the youngest’s name, then the elder’s. Habit.). Do they only have each other? Have they fought bitterly their entire lives?
