Tech Ennui: "cupsd: Child exited with status 98!"
http://techennui.blogspot.com/2010/08/cupsd-child-exited-with-status-98.html
A blog for those who wonder why technology has to be so difficult at times. Tuesday, August 10, 2010. Cupsd: Child exited with status 98! If you get the error "cupsd: Child exited with status 98! On your linux server, it's probably because cups was not running at some point and another process grabbed port 631, thinking it was a spare random port. Most likely it was rpc.statd, and you should be able to clear it by issuing "/etc/init.d/nfslock restart". January 5, 2011 at 2:36 PM.

Tech Ennui: April 2008
http://techennui.blogspot.com/2008_04_01_archive.html
A blog for those who wonder why technology has to be so difficult at times. Friday, April 11, 2008. Don Knuth had a problem. He wanted to write a book on programming algorithms, but wasn't happy with the tools available. So he wrote E. This feature allowed them to add a tweak to their text editor, which was the ability to. Many years later, and we have the World Wide Web (as opposed to Knuth's WEB) and we're still struggling to publish software in a way that's easy to read online. Knuth's stuff is gr...

A blog for those who wonder why technology has to be so difficult at times. Wednesday, February 6, 2008. Formatting documents for the Amazon Kindle. Today's Blog post is going to be a little different. Instead of preparing an article in advance, I'm going to treat this entry like a Wiki page and update it continuously as I make new discoveries…. For the moment, I've still to add some links to example pages and a couple of screen shots.). Now, it has to be said that text on the Kindle looks OK, but with o...

A blog for those who wonder why technology has to be so difficult at times. Saturday, October 27, 2007. Myer and Sutherland's Great Wheel of Reincarnation. Back in the early 70's, Myer and Sutherland (the latter of Evans and Sutherland high-end graphics fame) suggested that trends in graphics workstations (and by extension, computing in general) followed the ' great wheel of reincarnation. Tech Ennui: July 2008
http://techennui.blogspot.com/2008_07_01_archive.html
A blog for those who wonder why technology has to be so difficult at times. Friday, July 4, 2008. Still crazy after all these years. Today I found - if not a bug, then at least a problem - with an old piece of software that is so stable it hasn't been modified in several years. I Googled for stream-based unzip code and did find a couple of implementations, but after major hassles compiling them, none of them would read this file. What I eventually did was this: there is a utility with info-zip called "fu...

Tech Ennui: PL/SQL integer division
http://techennui.blogspot.com/2009/09/plsql-integer-division.html
A blog for those who wonder why technology has to be so difficult at times. Tuesday, September 1, 2009. I've been programming PL/SQL for a couple of years now and I only found out about this 'feature' of PL/SQL today. Without actually running it, what would you expect this program to output? A PLS INTEGER;. B PLS INTEGER;. C PLS INTEGER;. DBMS Output.put line('18 / 5 = ' c);. To the nearest int, rather than truncating, down or towards 0. October 9, 2009 at 11:39 PM. A blog for those who wonder why technology has to be so difficult at times. Monday, November 19, 2007. Like a phoenix, risen from the ashes. This post is dedicated to anyone Googling for "overheating problems for HP Pavilion dv4000". For a couple of weeks now, my HP portable has been getting very hot underneath at the back, at which point it unceremoniously powers down. I searched for other people with the same problem and found. Now my machine is nice and cool again, and I saved myself the cost of a new...

Tech Ennui: December 2007
http://techennui.blogspot.com/2007_12_01_archive.html
A blog for those who wonder why technology has to be so difficult at times. Friday, December 7, 2007. Get on the train! I'm beta-testing a new Google service at the moment which isn't all that well known yet: Grand Central. It's a web-based voicemail system and like many of the VOIP services on the net, it lets you select a phone number from almost anywhere in the US - you're not limited to your local calling area. Lookup program, and find which of them made a sensible word! Tuesday, December 4, 2007.
