There is an informal group. Of about 30 people people going out for rock climbing on a more or less regular basis. Almost all of these are residents in Damascus working for embassies, the UN, NGOs or major international companies. We also try to promote sports climbing among Syrians. Some of our hosts belong already to our most enthousiastic members.Apart from the regulars, we get some visitors who normally join in through one of the local climbers. Ski-touring in Syria Bludan/ Az Zabbadan, February 2006: Markus Gschwind and Jacques de Watteville, pioneers of skiing in Syria. The last thing that comes to one's mind when thinking about Syria is snow. However, in normal years most of the winterly precipitation in the Anti-Lebanon mountains is falling as snow. The Austrian UN soldiers stationed on the top of Mount Hermon are likely to be the first people who were skiing on Syrian territory. Markus enjoying perfect conditions skiing down towards Bludan.

Rock climbing in Syria
Rock climbing in Syria. Started only around 2000 and hence our Syrian climbing sites are still practically unknown outside Damascus. Thanks to the efforts of a group of dedicated individuals, in the last few years almost 200 bolted sport climbing routes in the close neighbourhood of Damascus have been established. Check out our page about ski-touring in Syria and Lebanon! During the cool and wet winter months (Dec-March), ski-touring is a valid alternative when the rock cliffs are too wet for climbing.
