Notes from the field. A while ago, I noticed that the disk write rate on my lab’s nfs server was high for an extended period of time. A bit of investigation revealed that it indeed was one of the software RAID arrays that was being bombarded with writes by nfsd. And found the errant nfs client, that was sending RPCs at a steady high rate. Over at that machine, I found that nautilus, part of the GNOME desktop, was using the CPU heavily. Notes from the field. Ubuntu dapper en IN locale. I had chosen the en IN locale as default while installing Ubuntu LTS 6.06 Dapper. Now upon starting emacs, I always got the following warning:. Warning: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C. So I did some digging and concluded that (surprize surprize! Xlib does not yet support the en IN locale😉 The problem can be solved by editing /etc/environment and changing en IN.UTF-8 etc. to en US.UTF-8. Laquo; runaway emacs. Date : June 21, 2006.

Notes from the field. Picasa on Ubuntu Edgy. Some time back, Google had released a packaged Picasa for Linux. 1] available as .rpm, .deb and a self-extracting .bin. I tried it out on Ubuntu Edgy. Installation was as simple as a dpkg -i picasa.deb. Upon starting it however, I saw the following issues:. It follows symbolic links while scanning for photographs. This meant that I got multiple copies of entire trees! Bad Fixed this by (yuk! Temporarily deleting the symbolic links (I could afford to do this).
