I recently participated in the THREESOME project, organised by The Design Kids. Which paired a studio, a graduate and a student together to make 15 typographic posters. I was paired with student Thea Skelsey and studio Oblong. I made the piece by cutting the word “it” out of several pieces of translucent coloured plastic. We are all a Part of the Same Thing. This was my entry for the 2011 Positive Posters. Competition. For too long, people have viewed themselves as separate and I wanted to represent a multitude of individuals using the nails, and then coloured string to show how we are all interconnected, and that together, we can make something beautiful. One of the requests for my Postcards from Rome project. Was the Italian Flag, so I bought back a cheesy little plastic flag from a gift store and embroidered onto it some custom type using gold thread. And so it begins. I’ve been handed the keys to a fantastic space in Surfers Paradise and told I have five weeks to install a solo exhibition. Excited is an understatement. The “space” is 124 square metres of dusty concrete and large amounts of glass windows, so it’s not really a “gallery” as such, more an installation space, which is exactly what I plan to do. As part of my Doctoral studies into tactile typography. The vinyl cutter arrived … at last! Opening on Valentine’s Day. I survived the scissor lift.

My friend Chris organised an exhibition called “Foxtrot” and wanted me to do a chalk piece in the cafe where the exhibition was being held. I was asked to create the letter Q for UPPERCASE Magazine’s “Beautiful Bitmaps” project, so I created ‘pixels’ out of hundreds of pieces of silk ribbon. For issue 15, we invited 26 typographers, designers and illustrators to make beautiful bitmaps by taking this vestigial part of digital type the bitmap and making it into something to be newly appreciated.
