One of the nastiest problems TAEB has to solve is also one of the most mundane. If you've ever played a game over a network or on a heavily loaded computer, you are probably familiar with lag and the problems it creates. While NetHack, as a turn-based game, does not suffer from directly lag-caused. It is still very difficult to make moves sensibly when the responses are delayed. The lower half of the level has turned into solid rock. This is an especially nasty case if the redraw was caused by stairs...

The Tactical Amulet Extraction Bot. This is the homepage of TAEB, the Tactical Amulet Extraction Bot for NetHack. TAEB is a framework for constructing a variety of automatic and semi-automatic players. It is a shared, on-and-off hobby of several people cooperating in #interhack on freenode. TAEB is capable of reaching Medusa depth on a somewhat regular basis, and has a sufficiently expressive set of primitives to build an Oracle-class bot in roughly 100 lines of clear code. In the beginning was nHackBot. Aka "Jessie the Bottie Ventura"), spawned by HanClinto in November of 2005. Written in C#, nHackBot was an advanced (for the time) bot. It could parse the entire screen and could perform rudimentary tasks such as dipping for Excalibur. nHackbot owned the (known) high mark for score and dungeon depth for quite some time, achieving a score 18,432 and maximum depth of 10.
