Tahir Shah, Biography
Tahir Shah, Biography. Tahir Shah, Biography. Tahir Shah is the author of ten books, chronicling a wide range of unusual and outlandish journeys. For him, there is nothing so important as deciphering the hidden underbelly of the lands in which he travels. He shuns well-trodden tourist paths, and avoids celebrated landmarks, preferring instead to position himself in a dusty café and observe life go by. He lives in Casablanca with his wife and two small children. Posted by Mangorains at 10:06 AM.

The Caliph's House, Tahir's Notes. The Caliph's House, Tahir's Notes. I think that a good story comes out of a struggle. It has to be earned, lived, experienced. That's why THE CALIPH'S HOUSE is special for me. It was crafted out of hardship and dire uncertainty. and as far as I am concerned, a story written from the heart takes on a life of its own. Ghost Busters of Casablanca
Ghost Busters of Casablanca. Ghost Busters of Casablanca. Two nights ago I went down to the dogs. There wasn’t a trilby, a sheepskin coat, or any pie ’n mash in sight but instead a sea of dark robed figures sporting handlebar mustachios and faded yellow slippers. There wasn’t anything unusual about it, as I was at the greyhound races held nightly in Casablanca’s famous Art Deco Velodrome. Muslims believe that when God created Man from clay, He also fashioned another species from smokeless fire. Known...

Morocco's Secret Jewel
In recent years Europeans have made a beeline for Morocco, lured by the medinas of Marrakech, Mèknes and Fès. They rent rooms in the glorious riads, courtyard homes, or even buy them and embark on the renovation. Mention Casablanca and most foreigners greet you with a scowl, and yell: ‘It’s not the real thing! Written for The Sunday Times, London). C) Tahir Shah, 2006. Posted by Mangorains at 1:17 PM. Tales From a Jinn Palace
Tales From a Jinn Palace. Tales From a Jinn Palace. In the UK a boarded up house might attract squatters. But in Morocco it would be a magnate for an invisible legion of spirits, known as ‘Jinns’. As if by some Medieval right of sale we inherited three guardians with the house. They insisted that we weren't safe and wouldn't be until a full-scale exorcism had taken place. The place, they said, was chock-full of the most despicable Jinns. Posted by Mangorains at 1:25 PM. Ghost Busters of Casablanca.

My Casablanca
What do you miss most when you are away? I miss the café society, the strong dark coffee served in thimble-sized glasses, and I miss buying fresh fish at the port, and the dazzling sight of red bougainvillea outside my bedroom window. But most of all I miss the gentleness of people and the sound of donkeys braying in the night. What’s the first thing you do when you return? Where’s the best place to stay? Place des Nations Unies.
