Making things that make people's lives better - Taking Notes

http://www.takingnotes.co/blog/2013/06/16/making-things

Making Things That Make People's Lives Better. Freshly back from WWDC I have a lot of thoughts rattling around about my profession and what the point is. Here’s one. Apple debuted something of a mission statement in the form of a video in this years keynote. Designed by Apple in California. It didn’t make the keynote, but this point is made even more effectively in a video released after the keynote. Making a difference. One app at a time. And with a very similar video that did make last years keynote.

Iterate - Taking Notes

http://www.takingnotes.co/blog/2013/03/12/iterate

The human side of this is profound. Appeal to the fact that they’re probably a decent human being. I want to use your software. I want to be a fan. I want to be a person who gives you money and buys your software and follows what you do. There’s not a lot of opportunities in most people’s lives to do a trivial thing and make a bunch of people’s lives immensely better. There’s not many things like that and accessibility is one of those things. Me rambling on the latest Iterate. Posted by Doug Russell.

Xcode Symbol Navigator and Callers - Taking Notes

http://www.takingnotes.co/blog/2013/04/10/xcode-symbol-navigator-and-callers

Xcode Symbol Navigator and Callers. Xcode has a whole lot of UI and it’s not exactly all easy to discover. Here’s a cool trick you can do with the symbol navigator to find out all the places in your code that you’re calling a given method on a given class. Here’s an example from a project I have with a class called. Reveal the symbol navigator and switch into assistant editor mode. Select the method (in this case. And from the context menu select. Reveal in Symbol Navigator. Posted by Doug Russell.

Coalescing - Taking Notes

http://www.takingnotes.co/blog/2013/01/03/coalescing

One of my favorite staples of Cocoa is performSelector:withObject:afterDelay:. It’s a dead simple ‘do this later’ implementation and endlessly useful for scheduling simple tasks. One of the things I use it for the most is to coalesce multiple calls into one call. A simple example would be reloading a table view everytime new data becomes available. If you’re getting new data 100 times a second, you don’t really want to reload the table every time. 2013-01-03 19:37:50.560 Test[6405:303] Foo. A less contri...

Taking note

A blog on the nature of note-taking and some of its practical as well as theoretical implications. Sunday, August 9, 2015. Book on "Zettelkasten Method". It's in German, however. Dan Sheffler on "One Thought per Note". The reference is to this post. But this one on Beatrice Webb. Might be just as interesting, as might be the one on algorithmic thinking. In fact, the approach to take notes one idea or one "fact" at a time is one of the most basic features of my note-taking approach. Here in the U.S. The a...

Taking Notes

Because it helps to remember the stuff that the media buries. Are in the business of air brushing history. Bloggers are in the business of exposing the deceit. Friday, November 07, 2008. In short, we live now in the Age of Post-Journalism. All that was before is now over, as this generation of journalists voluntarily destroyed the hallowed notion of objectivity and they will have no idea quite how to put Humpty-Dumpty back together again.". Not much—since they will have one of two non-choices: (1) ...
