Tales of Hofmann

Be reborn a poet! Thursday, July 10, 2014. In the last month or so, I've blogged at least once a week, but it's been several weeks since I did a Sunday School post, which is a shame because I missed some good stories in that stretch, like David and Goliath, and Bathsheba, and Samuel hewing Agag in pieces. Hopefully I can get back on track starting this week. On Sunday we're covering Psalms (yep, the whole book. I posted a few of these poems last year. FOR CHRISTMAS, YOU CAN COUNT ON ME. Change in your ph...

Tales of Hofmann: Take me out to the ball game

http://talesofhofmann.blogspot.com/2014/06/take-me-out-to-ball-game.html

Be reborn a poet! Tuesday, June 17, 2014. Take me out to the ball game. If I were going to start a Tumblr called "Attending Major League Baseball Games With Beautiful Women," I'd have a decent amount of content to get started with. But, since I think it's a rule that all Tumblrs. I'll just post the evidence here instead. Back in March, my friend Liz and I took a road trip to Arizona to check out spring training. March is definitely. A couple things are evident here: one, the regular iPhone camera takes m...

Tales of Hofmann: Reborn at last

http://talesofhofmann.blogspot.com/2013/11/reborn-at-last.html

Be reborn a poet! Wednesday, November 20, 2013. I started this blog a two and a half years ago, and haven't updated the design of it once in that time. As you can see, I did very little "designing" in the first place, either. One thing I did. Do was add a subtitle. Be reborn a poet! A line from the opera Tales of Hoffmann. Now, 30 months later, I'm finally posting some poetry. FOR CHRISTMAS, YOU CAN COUNT ON ME. Dear Santa, I can't sleep. The clock on my nightstand shows a pair of twelves. I was hoping t...

Tales of Hofmann: June 2014

http://talesofhofmann.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html

Be reborn a poet! Thursday, June 26, 2014. Ninety and nine problems. There are two LDS hymns that, when sung in meetings, used to always generate strong, almost electrifying spiritual sensations for me (hair standing on end, feeling something akin to the "burning in the bosom" mentioned in the scriptures, etc.). Well, more accurately, a line in each of the hymns: "find in thee my strength, my beacon" from " Lord, I Would Follow Thee. And "Wake up the world" from " Praise to the Man. My time spent ponderi...

Tales of Hofmann: Punday School

http://talesofhofmann.blogspot.com/2014/05/punday-school.html

Be reborn a poet! Wednesday, May 28, 2014. This Sunday's Gospel Doctrine class. Covers the Book of Judges. There are some great, inspiring stories and characters in the book, like Gideon and Deborah (a female prophet who was friends with a guy named Barak; feel free to consult this post. From a few weeks ago for some Obama jokes to either use or brace yourself for, and definitely get ready for at least one derogatory comment about "liberals"). It's not violent like the above examples, but perhaps the mos...

Lady Holiday: It's a New Year, It's a New Day

http://ladyholiday.blogspot.com/2013/12/its-new-year-its-new-day.html

Sunday, December 29, 2013. It's a New Year, It's a New Day. Well, it's not quite the new year yet, but it will be soon. Anyway, Sunday seems like a good day to start things on, or at least prepare. And I'm just raring to go for the new year, it seems. I just want to revel in newness and turn over several fresh new leaves. But I feel like one still sometimes. There is so much to do in this world- how will I ever do it all? Write letters. Back when I broke my hand, I swore that "when my hand heals, I'm...

Lady Holiday: Weekend Ramblings

http://ladyholiday.blogspot.com/2013/06/weekend-ramblings.html

Sunday, June 30, 2013. The ticket booth is shot up with bullet holes and the concession stand is a haven for wasps, but the flag stand has been recreated and advertises the history of the place, as well as its affiliation with Pepsi. Lady Holiday: April 2013

http://ladyholiday.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, April 21, 2013. Today's church, the Family Missionary Baptist Church, probably used to be a gas station. Now instead of filling up on fuel, you can fill up on the spirit! If I were them, that's what I would put in the sign on the window. And then I would start making it look a little less scary. And we also saw this place, which was a contender for this week's church pick, but I couldn't really pick it because it's not in Durham:. Who says a wood-chip factory can't be a work of sculptural art?

Lady Holiday: The Cantaloupe Festival

http://ladyholiday.blogspot.com/2013/07/the-cantaloupe-festival.html

Sunday, July 21, 2013. When C and I were on our honeymoon, we just wandered across North Carolina, taking blue highways wherever they led. Along the way we saw a sign for a cantaloupe festival and for the past three years C has joked about it. Finally this year I decided we should go see what it was all about. For only $3 it was heaven and a brain freeze. But such a delicious one! I would go back next year just for that. And he was offering it for sale as his own work. Sigh. Unfortunately I didn't get a ...

Lady Holiday: March 2013

http://ladyholiday.blogspot.com/2013_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 10, 2013. E'en down to old age all My people shall prove. My sovereign, eternal, unchangeable love;. And when hoary hairs shall their temples adorn,. Like lambs they shall still in My bosom be borne. Posted by Lady Holiday. Saturday, March 9, 2013. The heartbeat of waves, the endlessness of the horizon, the never ending ebb and flow. I am speechless but full of love for the beach. And mostly, I'm blessed with wonderful friends to spend the weekend with at the beach. Sunday, March 3, 2013.

Lady Holiday: May 2013

http://ladyholiday.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html

Sunday, May 19, 2013. This week's church is the First Baptist Church on Cleveland Street right in the middle of downtown Durham. C and I went on a picture-taking drive after our own church let out this afternoon and it seems like we kept circling around and ending up at this church. Endangered Durham has a history of the building here. And while I was reading about it I also came across an interesting modern history of the congregation here. But seriously, there is a wild foxglove growing in my garden!

Home with the boys. Thursday, June 4, 2015. Last time I made an entry on Cooking Without. I had 3 days before grocery day/pay day. Today is 5 days before grocery day. That is a tricky spot for sure. But there's also reality. There's no open fridge policy - I kid you not, they will never be filled. The appetite of a teenage boy is insatiable.
