Religion and Politics. A civil discourse. Friday, February 18, 2005. Over at Common Dreams. The first two paragraphs are enough to set the amazing tone. With that, the place exploded, and 500 students stormed out. The rest of them then started chanting, Bush! Posted by Mark Sumner @ 6:47 AM. Tuesday, February 15, 2005. Who wants to live forever? However, I find that the only thing tougher to contemplate than eternity is an ending. Sorry if it sounds narcissistic, but the prospect of a world without me.

TwoTaboos: March 2005
http://twotaboos.blogspot.com/2005_03_01_archive.html
Religion and Politics. A civil discourse. Saturday, March 19, 2005. There's been a lot of talk about getting our message across effectively. In short: we don't. We rail against the media(which deserves it) and against our own politicians (who also deserve it), for being such ineffectual purveyors of our ideas. Fencing, framing, or plain old propaganda, the right seems to have done a much better job at turning their message into terms that resonate with the public. Truth is, the right wing message is.

TwoTaboos: November 2004
http://twotaboos.blogspot.com/2004_11_01_archive.html
Religion and Politics. A civil discourse. Saturday, November 20, 2004. Let Democrats be Democrats. The newsmen are nodding sagely and talking about some national "shift to the right," and the pundits are all moaning about the Democrat's need to put 'family' and 'morals' at the center of our next campaign. By which they mean we should adopt the Republican model for what's right and wrong. There's just one problem with that plan - it won't work. So what are we going to do about it? What we're not going to ...

TwoTaboos: August 2004

Religion and Politics. A civil discourse. Thursday, August 26, 2004. John Kerry vs. The Slime Monsters. I'm not a lawyer, but I'm willing to play one on the web. Here are some of the players in the Swift Boat smear. This is not a comprehensive list by any means. For example, Kerry had eleven shipmates on the stage with him at Boston and another couple along the campaign trail. I'm too lazy to track them down, and this post was already becoming obscenely long. William L. Schachte Jr. Cross-examination: Th...

Religion and Politics. A civil discourse. Wednesday, July 27, 2005. Today's theological conundrum: did historical figures enjoy a privileged position with respect to spiritual matters? In other words, did Gilgamesh, Abraham, Moses, Mohammed, Buddha, David, Jesus, Peter, Paul or Ringo have better access to spiritual knowledge than anyone living today? While I'm a practicing Christian (always practicing, because I never get it right), in this case, I'm Jewish. There's a slogan offered up by the United Chur...

TwoTaboos: The Gift of the Democrats
http://twotaboos.blogspot.com/2005/07/gift-of-democrats.html
Religion and Politics. A civil discourse. Tuesday, July 26, 2005. The Gift of the Democrats. The ultimate problem - the problem at the heart of almost every wrong-headed idea that comes from the right - is that the Republicans have wandered into fantasyland. By this I don't mean that they are all stumbling along behind Peter Pan, or that they've turned their party symbol into an ear-flapping, flying elephant (though perhaps they have all taken too many turns on Mr. There's nothing wrong with remembering ...

TwoTaboos: October 2004
http://twotaboos.blogspot.com/2004_10_01_archive.html
Religion and Politics. A civil discourse. Sunday, October 17, 2004. My fear is that President Bush succumbs to the greatest threat to both any person of faith, and any person in power: pride. There is a reason that pride is among the seven deadly sins, and is considered by most scholars as the worst of those sins. Pride obscures thoughtfulness. Pride drowns out the niggling voice of doubt. And in certainty, faith is negated. I daily give voice to the old prayer: Lord, I believe, Lord help me in my unbeli...
