The Tall Birder

Sunday, 8 January 2017. Having failed to see the Bean Geese. On 2 January, and with the weather poor, I decided to have another go today. Arriving around 10am, I parked in Standlake village (unlike most others, it seems! And walked in along Shifford Lane. Unlike last time, the goose flock was present in their favourite field, and arriving at the viewing spot I was told by Nick Truby et al that the Bean Geese. Arriving at the deserted LL hide, I settled in to see what the GW Egret. After this glimpse, the...

The Tall Birder: Dorset and Norfolk - 8th - 22nd October

http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2016/10/dorset-and-norfolk-8th-22nd-october.html

Tuesday, 25 October 2016. Dorset and Norfolk - 8th - 22nd October. Here is a brief account and some photos from a low key, hastily arranged couple of weeks in Dorset and Norfolk - rather closer to home than where we had hoped to be in October. There was just one real highlight - a lifer in the second week in Norfolk! For more details, read on! For a larger image. After sometime, we managed to spot the Rose-coloured. In the hedge itself, where the view was of course partially obscured by twigs etc. Du...

The Tall Birder: Farmoor: 22nd October

http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2016/10/farmoor-22nd-october.html

Saturday, 22 October 2016. With thick fog first thing, clearly an afternoon visit to Farmoor was called for today. Unfortunately however there was little sign of the forecast sunny intervals and it remained uniformly overcast throughout my stay. Walking across the causeway, there were plenty of Meadow Pipits and a single Rock Pipit but of course my main objective was the Grey Phalarope that Ewan had found yesterday afternoon in brilliant sunny conditions! The Tall Birder: Standlake - 2 January 2017

http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2017/01/standlake-2-january-2017.html

Monday, 2 January 2017. Standlake - 2 January 2017. What brilliant weather today! Unfortunately my birding didn't do it justice. At Standlake, despite a fair amount of tramping around, I managed to miss the Smew and Bean Geese, but did see a very distant Great White Egret. I found little within camera range, apart from this moderately obliging Red Crested Pochards on Pit 28 (the one on the other side of the track from the Pit 60 North Shore Hide). The Tall Birder: June 2016

http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2016_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, 26 June 2016. M40 compensation area and Childrey: 25 June. I left the house in encouraging conditions, but things had already gone down hill before I arrived at the Bernwood Forest car park (the scene of previous more successful Purple Emperor hunts. From here it was about a 30min walk to the M40 compensation area, which, given Adam Hartley's. Excellent directions, I found quite easily. En-route the only sighting of note was my first Emperor. Dragonfly sighting of the season. For a larger image.

The Tall Birder: Otmoor: 19 November pm

http://tallbirder.blogspot.com/2016/11/otmoor-19-november-pm.html

Sunday, 20 November 2016. Otmoor: 19 November pm. It was good to be back in the field today after a few blank weeks due to a combination of the weather and a notable happy family event. For something a bit different today, I thought I would try the Otmoor Starling roost, for the first time ever! Mindful of the problems with car parking at the weekend, I arrived around midday to already find the place full! Appeared but it was too distant for good results with my current lens. So after this brief interlud...
