There are 4 classes in Taonga school. Find out more below. Reception class is a mixture of nursery and reception level children. The ages range from 3 - 7 years old. Children are expected to complete 2 years in this class. Most of the activities are play based as children have had very little experience of toys and games in their homes. They also begin to learn numbers and sounds for reading. This class is taught mainly in Nyanja however the children are beginning to learn some basic English words.

Taonga School relies on donations and sponsorship. The children pay a small amount each month, the equivalent of £2, which goes a small way to covering the cost for their books. Sponsorship has been split into different categories. Please see below for how your money could be used. Donations can be made through Zambian Education and Medical Support. Chickens, goats, pigs, turkeys, sheep and ducks are bred for meat. We also use the chickens for eggs. What we grown depends on the season but generally we have: tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, sunflowers, maize, pumpkins, eggplants, cabbage, kale, peppers, potatoes and onions. We have a herb garden with chillies, basil, mint, lemongrass, rosemary and chives. We have a small orchard with oranges, lemons, grapefruits, avocado and papaya. Old MacDonald's Farm Bakery makes home made cakes, biscuits, chutneys and marmalade using the best ingredients. The sale of products from Old MacDonald's Farm Bakery helps support children in school. The cost of sending one child to school in the compound is very little. Over the course of a year buying just one packet of biscuit’s a week pays tuition fees for one child, one large cake a month will pay for their books and just one loaf of bread a week will provide their uniform. Taonga School has been set up by Abigail, a qualified teacher, who joined the MacDonald's in August 2009, initially to help with the education of boys living at Old MacDonald's Farm. She now runs a community school for children who could not otherwise afford to go to school with over 100 children on roll, and growing. Our plan is very simple. Taonga - We are thankful. Taonga School had begun! The pupils from Taonga school all come from poor families that cant afford the books and uniforms needed to send their children to a government school. The children do not stay with us. They come every day, walking on the road alone, from as far as half an hour away. The word Taonga means we are thankful. The name was chosen by the parents after school had been open for about a year. Since we started we have so much to be thankful for!
