Tar Creek sits in the middle of the Tar Creek Superfund site that encompasses a 1,188 square mile area mostly in Northeastern Oklahoma and Southwestern Missouri. The EPA established a Hazard Ranking system. And a National Priorities List. In 1981 and 1982, respectively. The Tar Creek Superfund Site. July 4, 2012. Many people remember this iconic Mine Derrick. It stood over the last operating mine in the Picher Mining District. In it’s later years it was a popular tourist destination that allowed anyone to ride the cable bucket underground and take a tour of the mine.
