Students enjoy the challenge of Deductive Thinking Questions. This game-like format is an effective strategy to improve student thinking skills. As the teacher models questions that are general in nature, students gradually identify the specific answer through deductive thinking. This strategy can be applied to any curriculum area as a way to begin a unit and stimulate student interest or to review unit content. Write a specific answer on a 3 x 5 card (see examples below.). I believe, as you do, that asking good questions is an important step in metacognition. But, teaching questioning skills (QAR’s) is difficult so making it fun is critical.
