自然葬 という言葉は 送葬の自由をすすめる会 という市民団体が平成３年の１０月に遺骨を海にまく 散骨 を行った際に、この行為のことを、そのように命名したのがはじまりであるといわれています。 日本消費者協会が平成１１年に行った調査によると、自然葬について、１１パーセントの人が できれば自分はそうしたい 、３８パーセントの人が 故人の希望ならする 、７パーセントの人が 法的に問題がなければしたい と答えています。 戦前のような大家族であれば、昔ながらの 家墓 墓の正面に 家 と彫られている先祖代々伝わるその家の墓 を維持していくことはそれほど難しことではないのですが、戦後増え始めた核家族や、最近の少子化、一生結婚しないことを選ぶ人の増加、などといった家制度にまつわる状況の変化が、家墓の維持を困難にし、そのため家墓に入ることの出来ない もしくは入りたくない 人々が、その代替物として選択しているというわけです。
