Tasty experiments: Alton Brown and Candied Ginger
http://tasty-experiments.blogspot.com/2009/12/alton-brown-and-candied-ginger.html
Where the kitchen is my lab. Alton Brown and Candied Ginger. One of the few things I miss about not having cable: Good Eats. I really enjoy Alton Brown's approach to cooking-perhaps because he spends a lot of time discussing the chemistry of cooking. Plus he reminds me of my gen chem professor-quirky, smart, fun, educational. In fact, I'm convinced that if he wasn't a chef, he'd be a chemist. Anyway I made his recipe for candied ginger. Tasty experiments: Best Apple(sauce) pie EVER
http://tasty-experiments.blogspot.com/2009/11/best-applesauce-pie-ever.html
Where the kitchen is my lab. Best Apple(sauce) pie EVER. There is more than one way to skin a cat. Or so I'm told. There is also more than one way to make an apple pie. However, I recently discovered my favorite apple pie in my own kitchen. Applesauce pie presents this paradox of simplicity of ingredients and complexity of flavors. The texture is distinct from either of the two I described. It melts in your mouth. It pleases the tongue. This is a new favorite for Paramed and me. Not one I use frequently ...
Tasty experiments: January 2010
http://tasty-experiments.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html
Where the kitchen is my lab. A little bit of southern fried. Paramed and I decided to start the New Year with a traditional Southern breakfast: country fried chicken, biscuits, and gravy. (It was a bit of a "last hoorah" before reverting back to a healthy diet.). Paramed is the biscuit maker in our house. This go round he used a Paula Deen recipe. In his hands, he needed a little more flour (perhaps because we measure flour by weight instead of volume? 2 teaspoon kosher salt. Coat cutlets in flour, shaki...
Tasty experiments: The Great Pumpkin... recipe
http://tasty-experiments.blogspot.com/2009/11/great-pumpkin-recipe.html
Where the kitchen is my lab. The Great Pumpkin. recipe. There was a pumpkin slaughter at my home last night. And it was so worth it. I've been planning to make Disgruntled Julie's. Chocolate Chip Pudding Pumpkin Bread. For a few weeks, but there's always something else to do. Well, I was in desperate need of some therapeutic baking last night, so I stayed up late to make it. It is absolutely delicious. Run! Make this soon, if not today! Fall is my favorite season because I love to bake with pumpkins!

Samantha Scientist: November 2010
http://samanthascientist.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Saturday, November 20, 2010. So I'm really trying to defend and graduate this semester, hence the lack of blog posts. And now, here it is, 3:30 am on Saturday morning, and I can't sleep. Why not? My brain won't stop. What's going through my running brain? What will I say if my committee asks me "What's next? I know, that should really be what I'm worrying about when I'm still analyzing data and my thesis is due in 1.5 weeks). But in any case, here's what I've come up with. So, what's next? I'm a female s...

Samantha Scientist: The catch-22 of the unsupportive advisor
http://samanthascientist.blogspot.com/2010/08/catch-22-of-unsupportive-advisor.html
Wednesday, August 25, 2010. The catch-22 of the unsupportive advisor. Some advisors are universally unsupportive. Others are more selective. The result seems to generally be the same: failure of the unsupported. So the question is:. Do we fail due to lack of support? Or do we not get support because we are failures? Samantha Scientist: The perfect pair of heels - and other thoughts on shoes
http://samanthascientist.blogspot.com/2010/09/perfect-pair-of-heels-and-other.html
Thursday, September 16, 2010. The perfect pair of heels - and other thoughts on shoes. So, I'm back on fashion again. In my previous post about my dream wardrobe. I determined I only needed 6 pairs of shoes: ballet flats. I dream of the "perfect" heels. Heels that are sexy as hell, that you can also run a mile in. I know that doesn't exist, but I really *want* it to. So instead, the closest to the single pair of perfect heels would be a classic leather pump. Because it looks better with casual t-shirts a...

Samantha Scientist: Notes, organization, and reproducibility
http://samanthascientist.blogspot.com/2010/08/notes-organization-and-reproducibility.html
Wednesday, August 4, 2010. Notes, organization, and reproducibility. How do you keep notes and records on your experimental methods, data, analysis, and journal articles? What do you keep on file, and where, and how do you organize it? As scientists, we all face the record-keeping problem, and I'm interested in how others deal with it. Over the course of grad school, I've developed my own system in fits and starts, and I'll describe what's working for me. What to keep, what to keep? Where to keep it?

Samantha Scientist: My dream wardrobe
http://samanthascientist.blogspot.com/2010/08/my-dream-wardrobe.html
Wednesday, August 18, 2010. Ok, I know that wardrobes aren't exactly science-talk, but hear me out - this is a minimization problem. Now, don't get me wrong. I like clothes. And accessories. And shoes. Especially shoes. I like to play around with outfits and looks sometimes, either in my own closet or in clothing stores. But for the everyday grind, I just want go-to outfits that are comfortable and make me feel and look good. So we have the requirements for typical 1-2 weeks, the usual special occasions&...

Samantha Scientist: Why do I suck?
http://samanthascientist.blogspot.com/2010/08/why-do-i-suck.html
Tuesday, August 31, 2010. Why do I suck? I'm trying to write my thesis. I really am. I just keep getting stuck, so it's going super slowly, and I'm plagued with guilt about being slow. But every time I try to push myself, to give myself deadlines, to increase the pressure on myself, it just backfires, and I get less done. I started this game as a smart girl, capable of working very hard. As we all did. But I was naive, and my whole life, all that had been demanded of me was to do what I was told, the way...

Samantha Scientist: February 2010
http://samanthascientist.blogspot.com/2010_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 16, 2010. Procrastination, or incubation? I think I'm an incubator. Which apparently means I procrastinate, but in a good way. That is, I perform well under pressure, so I put stuff off until the last minute, then become highly engaged and complete the task with high quality. But I don't think it works well for me as a scientist, since I've had almost no hard deadlines in 8 years. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Procrastination, or incubation? This is an example page. It’s different from a blog post because it will stay in one place and will show up in your site navigation (in most themes). Most people start with an About page that introduces them to potential site visitors. It might say something like this:. I’m a bike messenger by day, aspiring actor by night, and this is my blog. I live in Los Angeles, have a great dog named Jack, and I like piña coladas. (And gettin’ caught in the rain.). 8230;or something like this:. You may use these.

Tasty experiments
Where the kitchen is my lab. I know, I know. I never call. I never write. To be honest, I simply haven't had much time for fabulous cooking- which is kind of sad. I also haven't had time (or is that patience) to tweak the xml formatting, so this blog still has some rough edges. I have updated a few posts with pics of the end product, just to tempt you a little more :). From all the six monasteries that export to the United States. A few weeks ago I picked up Equinoxe du printemps. Paramed is the biscuit ...
