The school that is linked to the project we support opened in 1994 as a result of the efforts of one Zambian Christian woman who saw that there was a need and did something about it. Her vision is to help orphans and other vulnerable children receive quality education. Teaching is in English, which is Zambia's national language although many people do not speak it fluently. Learning English is essential for the kind of employment that will enable a person to break free from the poverty cycle.

Two of the girls who have been supported by Tatenda Trust since they were in primary school, Saphi and Mary, have now completed their secondary education. They both did exceptionally well and are now studying nursing at. St Francis' Hospital, Katete. Mary is the first one in her family to go past grade 4 at school. The Zambian trust that we support pays for a number of children to attend school. These children come from poor families who would not otherwise be able to send them to school. Even at government schools there are expenses such as uniforms and books which prohibit children attending. Tatenda Trust does not offer a traditional child sponsorship programme as it does not wish to encourage favouritism, but supporters would be welcome to write to the school or a particular class if they wished.

Most have lost either one or both parents and some come from the shanty towns or rural areas. Accessing good quality education will make a real difference in the lives of these children by enabling them to get out of the poverty trap, which is a never ending cycle for so many families in Zambia.
