Where the animals live in a state of zen and the farmers keep busy. This is just to say…. Just what weekends are for…. →. August 25, 2011. About two years ago, after much trial and error of combining recipes I found in cookbooks, online, blogs, etc., I came up with what we considered a perfect recipe for our homestead cornbread. It was so delicious that I submitted it for publication in a cookbook that a group of my girlfriends put out to raise money for one of our favorite message boards. Now for the aw...

Where the animals live in a state of zen and the farmers keep busy. It’s been awhile…. Took the hogs to market…. →. July 5, 2011. We’ve been blessed with lots of tomatoes this year, so I have been coming up with all sorts of recipes to use up these homegrown organic yummies. This pizza recipe uses fresh chopped tomatoes sauteed into a chunky sauce. First, I started the dough working for the crust. I like to make the dough from scratch and have found that the bread machine works great for this. After the ...

Since it’s time for me to make another batch of homemade laundry soap, I figured I should post the recipe here so y’all can make some too! Here is the basic recipe:. 1 box 20 Mule Team Borax (76 ounces). 1 box Arm and Hammer brand Washing Soda (55 ounces). 2 or 3 bars homemade soap (I buy this from my friend Jasmine Ringger at Fruitful Hill Farm). Where the animals live in a state of zen and the farmers keep busy. Homemade pizza →. It’s been awhile…. July 5, 2011. Life around here got really crazy busy in June. My sweet husband had a health scare that landed him in the emergency room😦, but he is thankfully mended and back to his usual routine. At almost the exact same time that hubby was ailing, I was in a mad dash to put the finishing touches on my Graduate School application and writing portfolio. Where the animals live in a state of zen and the farmers keep busy. Our favorite cornbread →. This is just to say…. August 15, 2011. That the plums I purchased from the grocery store are neither juicy nor sweet. In fact, the skins are bitter and the flesh tastes almost like nothing, with a dash of blech😦 thrown in. What a disappointment. I guess I could take them back to the store for a refund, but that’s probably more trouble than it’s worth. This entry was posted in the view from here. The downtown fa...

Where the animals live in a state of zen and the farmers keep busy. Neck deep in research and reading…. →. Just what weekends are for…. September 3, 2011. My new school and work schedule leaves me with Thursdays and Sundays as my usual days off. So, after my class ends on Wednesday night it’s officially my “weekend”! Apparently the plumbing gods have clued in to my new schedule. No leaks between the water meter and the house, not leaks in the barn, the pasture, the goat paddocks, the dog yard…̷...

Where the animals live in a state of zen and the farmers keep busy. Farm scenery photos →. Took the hogs to market…. July 7, 2011. How quickly the past 5 months have gone by. Seems like it was just a few weeks back that I went to pick up two just-weaned piglets from our friends and fellow homesteaders Tiffany and Stef Finley at Slapdash Farm in Elgin. These pigs were sired by a Chester White/Duroc boar that we sold to the Finleys last year. The sow was a purebred Hampshire from show hog lines. A few days...
