Ferry ride back from Stromness to Scrabster [yes, that’s the name of the town on the mainland, a name reminiscent of crabs, scabs, and shyster–though we saw no evidence of any of those] on one of our blessedly few rainy, gray days. Trotter and Caroline's blog. Sunday 7-5 (Dornoch, Pitlochry, Edinburgh). In the Am walked over to visit the pretty cute church right across from No. 9. It was originally built in the 13th century, but now only a couple of skinny pillars survive from that building; all the rest (99% of the physical structure) was put up in the 17th century, making it a real newcomer on the church scene. Trotter and Caroline's blog. Drove to Kirkwall, a nice town, where we loved the St. Magnus Cathedral, begun in the 12th century in honor of a Norwegian good-guy named Magnus by his nephew, Roland. Or maybe it was Arthur. Beautiful late Romanesque-early-Gothic church. Then lunch near the docks at “The Shore,” which was quite nice. Saw a wedding emerge from St. Magnus. Paint and cast concrete.
