Stumbling Sacrament: October 2011
http://nickduffdavies.blogspot.com/2011_10_01_archive.html
With apologies to Austin Farrer who said priests should be walking sacraments of the grace of God. This week we mark the Commemoration of the faithful departed; All Souls’ day. An annual opportunity to remember and give thanks for those whom we have loved and see no more. Death, be not proud, though some have called thee. Mighty and dreadful, for thou are not so;. For those whom thou think'st thou dost overthrow. Die not, poor Death, nor yet canst thou kill me. And soonest our best men with thee do go,.

With apologies to Austin Farrer who said priests should be walking sacraments of the grace of God. The way, the truth and the life. Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, the truth and the life". This iconic claim, reported in the Gospel of John are words which have echoed down the centuries. I want to begin with Professor Stephen Hawking who last week gave a lecture entitled, ‘Why are we here? Such issues of the afterlife, belief and truth loom large in our Gospel reading this morning. Indeed, the word &...

With apologies to Austin Farrer who said priests should be walking sacraments of the grace of God. Ah yes well, dear followers you may be frankly disappointed about the current radio silence on the blog. The fact of the matter is I'm rather wonderfully and creatively busy in the new parish which is a lot of fun but means that there ain't much time for the blogosphere. Weekdays (Mon, Wed and Thurs). 12 noon Holy Communion and meditation. 8am Holy Communion (BCP). Posted using BlogPress from my iPhone.

With apologies to Austin Farrer who said priests should be walking sacraments of the grace of God. The roar of the crowd. Last week Helen and I went to see Kylie Minogue at the huge O2 arena in Greenwich. Kylie puts on a spectacular show involving incredible outfits, flying angels, fountains, scores of dancers, hundreds of lights and a dance beat that seemed to go right through you. 8217; Maybe they had heard that Jesus healed the sick, perhaps they had heard rumours that he had raised Lazarus from the d...

Stumbling Sacrament: A meditation on Jacob wrestling with God
http://nickduffdavies.blogspot.com/2007/07/meditation-on-jacob-wrestling-with-god.html
With apologies to Austin Farrer who said priests should be walking sacraments of the grace of God. A meditation on Jacob wrestling with God. So he said to him, ‘What is your name? 8217; And he said, ‘Jacob.’ Then the man said, ‘You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel, for you have striven with God and with humans, and have prevailed.’ Then Jacob asked him, ‘Please tell me your name.’ But he said, ‘Why is it that you ask my name? What can I hear? What can I smell? Make us long to see your face.

Stumbling Sacrament: September 2011
http://nickduffdavies.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
With apologies to Austin Farrer who said priests should be walking sacraments of the grace of God. A recent Volkswagen advert showed cars driving around a city with guardian angels sitting on the roofs. They were there keeping the drivers safe from harm. Visit this house, O Lord, we pray, drive far from it all the snares of the enemy; may your Holy angels dwell with us and guard us in peace, and may your blessing be always upon us. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. Links to this post. The video above is a H...

Stumbling Sacrament: August 2011

With apologies to Austin Farrer who said priests should be walking sacraments of the grace of God. This month the Church remembers John Bunyan, author of ‘Pilgrim’s Progress’. A book which once was the most popular in the English language after the Bible. Whilst you may not have read it you will probably have some familiarity with it through the hymn, ‘To be a pilgrim’ which begins, “He who would valiant be…”. Links to this post. Stumbling Sacrament: From the upper room to choral eucharist
http://nickduffdavies.blogspot.com/2011/08/from-upper-room-to-choral-eucharist.html
With apologies to Austin Farrer who said priests should be walking sacraments of the grace of God. From the upper room to choral eucharist. What I would like to do this morning is take you on an imaginary journey, a kind of time machine if you like which will take us to five differing services down the ages to show us how the past has influenced our worship today. Our journey starts in Jerusalem and will end here. Our time machine now takes us forward to 1618 but has only moved us to the other side of So...
