Friday, December 12, 2014. To read our previous post on the introduction of the Cooper Scale at Powell. Powell flute with left hand low B lever. Closed hole flute keys. Open hole flute keys. Friday, December 5, 2014. Fitting a Wooden Flute Headjoint. To read a previous post on burnishing the body tenon to fit a footjoint. Changes in the metal that are done too quickly and are too much of a change certainly would not give the finisher the desired result. In fact, it would most likely lead to something...

Friday, February 27, 2015. Left to right: Silver and Aurumite 9k Handmade Conservatory flutes. The Powell Signature and Conservatory flutes are two of our most popular models, so we are often asked, "What is the difference between them? There are just a few differences, so we wanted to help answer that question. From the "top down," the Signature and Conservatory flutes differ in the following ways:. 3) Mechanism - There is a pinned mechanism on the Signature and a pinless mechanism on the Conservatory.

Friday, March 27, 2015. By Steven A. Wasser. President, Verne Q. Powell Flutes, Inc. When we decided to co-manufacture a step-up flute in 2002, our conceptualization of Sonaré, with a Chinese body and a Powell headjoint, was ground-breaking. I vividly recall one of our long-time Powell players coming up to us at the convention that summer. With her hand on her hip, she demanded to know, “Why Powell is making a flute in China? Friday, November 21, 2014. With the help of flute finisher and headjoint cutter Lindsey McChord, we’ve been learning a great deal about the art of cutting flute and piccolo headjoints. After speaking with her about cutting metal flute headjoints, wooden flute headjoints, and Profiled piccolo headjoints, we started wondering - what about different metals? Is the process different for cutting headjoints made from different metals? But what about Aurumite? Silver shavings definitely look like curling ribbon!

Friday, October 31, 2014. Last week, we stopped by the Conservatory and Signature stringing department and watched Stefania Iamandei building a pinless mechanism for a Conservatory flute. This week, we had the chance to catch up with Ranjana Ranjana as she was building a pinned mechanism for a Signature flute. In the photos below, they are a little easier to see because many of them have not yet been cut to their final length - and for the ones that are cut to length, we tried to zoom in with the camera!

Friday, April 24, 2015. Have you heard the term "heavy wall" in regard to flutes? When we go to shows like the NFA, we do have people asking if we have "heavy wall" flutes. So, what exactly is the "heavy wall" flute? The Custom silver flutes have thickness choices, but what about gold? All of the Custom gold flutes (regardless of karat), have a body thickness of .012,"and the body tubing for platinum flutes is .010.". From yet another post (which you can read by following this link. President, Verne Q...
