Teaching English in a Foreign Land: Intrepid Den: COSTA RICA
http://teachingenglishinaforeignland.blogspot.com/2015/06/intrepid-den-costa-rica.html
Intrepid Den: COSTA RICA. Here's the latest post from Intrepid Den in Costa Rica. With incredulity, I watched my bag shoot out on to the console at San Jose airport, like a torpedo from a submarine! I was so sure I wouldn't see if for days, if ever, that I'd even stashed emergency supplies of everything including tobacco, into my carry on luggage. Some things I can do without, but tobacco isn't one of them. Paul showed me around and asked where I'd like to sleep in the huge Artists' House in the garden o...
Teaching English in a Foreign Land: Summer off!
http://teachingenglishinaforeignland.blogspot.com/2015/07/summer-off.html
This is where I'll be hiding. So don't try follow me. Photo by A Guy Taking Pictures. I'm taking the summer off Teaching English in a Foreign Land to focus on my novel. There comes a time in every wannabe novelist's life when they realise that unless they buckle down and get on with it, and put distrations to one side, then the novel will always be an unpublished novel. And with two kids to look after now time is precious, so blogging has to take a hit. This doesn't mean you can't buy my book.
Teaching English in a Foreign Land: FCE keeps me sane, Spanglish is real, troublesome students…
http://teachingenglishinaforeignland.blogspot.com/2015/06/fce-keeps-me-sane-spanglish-is-real.html
FCE keeps me sane, Spanglish is real, troublesome students. Sometimes you get to a point as a TEFL teacher and wonder if you know it all. I mean, how difficult is it to teach kids how to put an ‘s’ at the end of a verb, or help them pronounce like, like ‘like’, and not like ‘lick.’. Here are eight things I’ve learnt this year as a TEFL teacher, spilt over two blogs. What's round the corner? Photo by Epcott Legacy. Troublesome classes are always round the corner. We live in a Spanglish world. If you reall...
Teaching English in a Foreign Land: DELTA a waste of time, blossoming students, and living well as a TEFL teacher
http://teachingenglishinaforeignland.blogspot.com/2015/06/delta-waste-of-time-blossoming-students.html
DELTA a waste of time, blossoming students, and living well as a TEFL teacher. Here’s part 2 of last week’s blog. How many of your students. Make it into a flower? Only one or two students really blossom. How is it possible that you teach the 3. Conditional, or some tricky ‘turn’ phrasal verbs, but only one or two students will actually remember, and be able to produce it, in the next class? What I noticed this year is that it’s always the ones who are avid note takers. Doing a DELTA was a waste of time.
Teaching English in a Foreign Land: ESL Drilling Resources
http://teachingenglishinaforeignland.blogspot.com/2013/03/esl-drilling-resources.html
One aspect that I got pulled up on after my first LSA on the DELTA. Was my drilling ability. I suppose it was fair enough considering that I just wasn't doing any before. I used to think drilling was a waste of time and I felt silly getting my students to repeat the same sentences or phrases over and over again. I know now that it is a vital part of teaching English. Students need to practise their pronunciation repeatedly so that they can transfer the language to memory. Teaching Techniques - Drilling.

Progressively Unnecessary
Monday, December 10, 2012. You had to know this was coming. I've finished my degree, and I walk on Saturday. It was a stressful ride, but I am so proud of myself for completing it. This past month has been one of contemplation. In the heart of rushing to meet a deadline, I was also looking to the future, at what happens after. I finish. It's looking less and less likely that I will have a position at any level, high school or college. It's just the market is right now. I get it. Sunday, December 9, 2012.
