Teaching Frederick Douglass

Wednesday, August 17, 2011. August 17th in a Series of Short Letters. I am deeply sorry for having disturbed your colony when I tried to pour myself a bowl of cereal this morning. It was terribly inconsiderate of me, especially the part where I unceremoniously dumped half a box of delicious cereal into the trash. Or the part where I cold-bloodedly drowned you in the sink to clean your swarming black bodies off the white porcelain bowl. Next time I will try to be more careful. Dear Donors' Choose -. I am ...

Teaching Frederick Douglass: January 2010

http://www.teachingfreddied.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 25, 2010. You are not alone.". This is one of the things TFA tries to pound into our heads before we start the year. And right now I am struggling to keep it at the forefront of my mind. Not sure why, but I am feeling horribly alone right now. On a completely unrelated note, a small part of me is not looking forward to school tomorrow because I am a huge softie, and my kids know it. Especially H. Tuesday, January 19, 2010. Eight hundred fifty-five hours later. End of the semester means th...

Teaching Frederick Douglass: Update... long overdue.

http://www.teachingfreddied.blogspot.com/2010/10/update-long-overdue.html

Monday, October 25, 2010. Update. long overdue. I think, though, that it is time to let some of this go and move forward. I have students now. The first quarter is almost over. Whether I’ve decided how I feel about it or not, it has become real all around me. My problem child, DM, mastering 5 objectives in two days when allowed to be in a class by himself. My self-conscious baby, SO, coming out of her shell, eating her first meal at school, and bringing me a bracelet as a gift after class. Seeing one of ...

Teaching Frederick Douglass: November 2010

http://www.teachingfreddied.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Saturday, November 13, 2010. History is for the Victors. This past Veteran's day I watched the film version of the stage "play" The People Speak (it's not really a traditional play, more reminicent of The Vagina Monologues. Is based on Howard Zinn's A People's History of the United States. While The People Speak. The New York Times. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I'm still learning how to run. View my complete profile. Teaching Frederick Douglass: Ball: Rolling

http://www.teachingfreddied.blogspot.com/2011/08/ball-rolling.html

Monday, August 15, 2011. Remember all that nervous energy from the last post? It's getting under control. How you ask? I have a long term plan that I borrowed and adapted; I have seven objectives written for my first unit; and almost without thinking about it, I'm getting the bones of my management plan worked out. Booyah, nervous energy, booyah. So so so so EXCITED! And, choir starts in two weeks. I. Love. Fall. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). I'm still learning how to run. View my complete profile.

brain or shine: April 2011

http://brainorshine.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html

Sunday, 17 April 2011. I'm having trouble carrying a thought out for more than a few sentences. It was strange going back to work after Becky. Returned home to Chicago. However, I've since been resolved to get out of the house more. There's so many cool things to do nearby - I need to experience more of them. Probably one that I don't need to experience more of is Casa Bonita. Which is supposedly a restaurant but more likely, as one disenchanted employee put it, the lovechild of DisneyLand and Tijuana.

brain or shine: July 2010

http://brainorshine.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Monday, 12 July 2010. Happy birthday, Emmalyn! Sunday, 4 July 2010. July, July, July-y-y-y. I'm spending my fourth playing with this puppy. He doesn't have a name, yet, but I've been calling him Buster, Peanut Butter, Louis (as in Armstrong), Pickle, Bowzer, Girl Scout, Robin (as in Hood), Butternut (as in squash), and Dumpling (which my boyfriend says isn't manly enough). Tonight we'll light off small fireworks. Good times. Tags: (less than three). Weather of the mind. Crustacean island (travel blog).

Monday, 26 December 2011. Feeling artsy and supportive? Then support my brother's label's new Kickstarter campaign:. Weather of the mind. It takes a little rain to refract that shine into color. More records of life (fellow bloggers). Crustacean island (travel blog). I've just come across something interesting. Mama Sarah's Kitchen (cooking blog). Pretending to Know You (flash fiction blog). brain or shine: June 2010

http://brainorshine.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Monday, 28 June 2010. I'm sitting at a desk, filling in for the receptionist (who's gone home with a sore throat and no voice) at the temp agency I've been using to find work. Unusual. I also found out today that I'm the top candidate for one of the jobs I interviewed for - so that's exciting! Things about Denver I'm getting used to. Yes, preposition at the end):. The weather (and learning to predict it). Distances (everything here is farther apart than they are in the Midwest). Really hot summer days.

brain or shine: June 2011

http://brainorshine.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 28 June 2011. Why I haven't written in a fucking long time. I spend all day logged into gmail for work. Blogger is owned by Google. When I try to log in to this blog account, I am thwarted. Things that have happened in my life since last I wrote:. Nick and I went on vacation to my aunt's lakeside cabin, where we ate a lot of food and built bonfires every night. PRizz and Dexy got married (still totally surreal to me). The writing group is still going strong. Reread some Sherlock Holmes.

brain or shine: The end

http://brainorshine.blogspot.com/2012/01/end.html

Wednesday, 25 January 2012. Brain or Shine had a good long run. I'm moving on to greener pastures - Brain or Shine feels like a good documentation of my college years, and now it's time to open a new chapter. Find me at my new blog. Weather of the mind. It takes a little rain to refract that shine into color. More records of life (fellow bloggers). Crustacean island (travel blog). I've just come across something interesting. brain or shine: February 2011

http://brainorshine.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 15 February 2011. It LOOKS like I'm being a focused, hardworking grownup -. But secretly I get to be wayward and inquisitive. All the time. And I'm getting paid to do it! This post is cannibalized from my other blog. Because I'm feeling lazy. Sorry.). Here's how I lucked out, and what I've been up to since last I wrote:. Found seasonal retail work (which was surprisingly far less painful than anticipated, as my coworkers were kind and hilarious and the company was refreshingly people-centric).

brain or shine: September 2011

http://brainorshine.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Thursday, 29 September 2011. Don't read this if you don't like reading complaints, though there is a good bit about a dream I had this morning at the end. There were sharks. I guess I'm not a very good blogger. Most of the people I encounter in the blogosphere annoy me - there's too much crossover with the ethereal people over on Pinterest (which, if you didn't know, is a site for those who like to make scrapbooks full of things other people have done or made or written). I can't really blame bloggers wh...

brain or shine: August 2010

http://brainorshine.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 31 August 2010. I'll try to write more often. So Nick just returned to school for his last year of undergraduate education. It's a bummer, but I don't begrudge it of him at all - senior year was a blast. And we'll manage. It won't be fun, or easy. But we've done it before, and we can handle it now. It's part of that whole Some Things Are Worth Any Amount of Heartache thing. I almost feel like this will motivate me to really get going on the Being a Functioning Adult thing. I need. So I haven't y...

brain or shine: March 2011

http://brainorshine.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Monday, 28 March 2011. Other blog and mindless crafting. Day two from Bad Habits and Character Flaws. One of the more trivial ones. So this new other blog. Is terribly self indulgent and also kind of emo, but I'll pretend it's a self-improvement project instead. I have a few other posts ready to go, and I think I should have called it Bad Habits and Embarrassing Neuroses. Oh, well. Paper chain explosion (thank you, Anthropologie, for your ridiculously wasteful and aesthetically pleasing catalogs). It's e...
