In the Space of Reasons: January 2015
http://inthespaceofreasons.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html
In the Space of Reasons. Tuesday, 27 January 2015. On returning to earlier work. I have been invited by Routledge to submit a proposal for a second edition of my book. On John McDowell, originally published by Acumen. (There is an irony about this that it would be indiscreet to report here.) It prompts a couple of thoughts but perhaps I should say something about McDowell for anyone who has stumbled on this blog because of shared interest in the philosophy of mental healthcare and of psychiatry. British ...

In the Space of Reasons. Saturday, 15 August 2015. Cropping up – briskly, abruptly as is the nature of the medium - on twitter today, he expressed a common (and my) view from within academia: twitter and its visibility may be necessary for academic work and the stress on dissemination and impact but it is difficult: “I find it exhibitionist. Who cares what I do, did or think? Some tweets won’t. Those which most encourage the label ‘meme’ (a dreadful concept), perhaps. So, for ex...I realise I risk being ...

In the Space of Reasons. Thursday, 12 March 2015. 8216;The co-production of what? 8217; Notes for a workshop at Keble College, Oxford. I am giving a talk at a workshop in Oxford next week called Therapeutic Conflicts: Co-Producing Meaning in Mental Health. I suspect it’s a closed mulling-things-over event as I’ve not noticed any publicity for it. The background is:. My own thoughts are, sadly too obviously, very preliminary and rough. The co-production of what? Diagnostic categories / taxonomy. The term ...

In the Space of Reasons: Reasons for buying a house
http://inthespaceofreasons.blogspot.com/2015/07/reasons-for-buying-house.html
In the Space of Reasons. Friday, 31 July 2015. Reasons for buying a house. I was talking to a friend over pizza in Kendal last night who is beginning to think of buying a house, possibly here. Asking about the factors that would influence a selection she suggested a variety. I have not tidied them up to be properties or qualities of a house but rather reasons of any sort. They included:. Proximity to either Kendal station. A view of greenery. Avoidance of a split level garden. Fear of icy pavements.

In the Space of Reasons: Avner Baz on the final section of Avner Baz' 'On when words are called for'

In the Space of Reasons. Friday, 7 August 2015. Avner Baz on the final section of Avner Baz' 'On when words are called for'. 8220;Dear Tim,. I just read your post about the paper. Thank you so much for reading it and commenting on it. I wrote the paper almost 15 years ago, but the basic argument is simple and still seems to me to be sound (McDowell has since retracted the idea, which was the target of my paper, that our experience contains claims, or has propositional content):. Be used to say what someo...

In the Space of Reasons. Thursday, 18 September 2014. Two draft abstracts for presentations in Durham. On the role of the Constitutive Ideal of Rationality. Does inter-personal understanding emerge. On the therapeutic status of McDowell’s representationalism. In Mind and World. Of perceptual experience. Given McDowell’s meta-philosophical aims, the very substance of the recent stages of the evolution of the account suggests the need for a re-examination of the argument for representationalism i...The One...

In the Space of Reasons. Wednesday, 20 May 2015. Rereading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance after 32 years. My old friend Derek, who spends his days repairing a couple of aging Moulton bicycles, reminded me by email of a scene in Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. So ignoring all the present tense adventure on a motorbike, the following themes struck me on a quick review. He was seeing what the shim was. This leads to the following key early distinction between romantic and classical.

In the Space of Reasons. Tuesday, 23 December 2014. Debates in Values-Based Practice: Arguments For and Against. This came out whilst I’ve been away and so now I can have a quick skim read. In the Space of Reasons: Tâtonnement and failing to 'find' a paper
http://inthespaceofreasons.blogspot.com/2015/07/tatonnement-and-failing-to-find-paper.html
In the Space of Reasons. Wednesday, 22 July 2015. Tâtonnement and failing to 'find' a paper. I spent yesterday trying to start a paper on John Campbell’s noughties papers [Campbell 2007, 2008, 2009] on causation in psychiatry and psychology but failed to get anywhere. Having recently read Peter Goldie’s book The Mess Inside. I wonder whether the word for the day’s activities is ‘ tâtonnement. The basic plot idea I was struggling with has the following vague elements. 4) So the explanation of delusions do...
