Seven Hills: an outsider's view of Istanbul. Sunday, July 6, 2008. Day 13 and 14: Ankara and the Midnight Train to Istanbul. The first day we decided to take day trip to Gordion, a two hour bus ride from Ankara. Gordion was the capital of the Phrygian kingdom, which flourished several thousand years ago. Ken Sands, a UNC professor, happened to actually excavate at the site and led us around:. Quiz: who is the most famous of the Phrygians? We also visited Kocatepi Mosque, which is one of the largest mosqu...

Seven Hills: an outsider's view of Istanbul. Thursday, May 29, 2008. The eunuchs could only go so far into the harem. After that point, the only male allowed in the harem was the sultan. He had a secret entrance from his own harem in the third courtyard, and even shared a bathroom with the queen mother, who was in charge of the women of the harem. This is the famous "living room" of the harem where the women hung out:. But anyway, I'll wait to go into more of the stuff that I've done this week tomorrow -...

Seven Hills: an outsider's view of Istanbul: Day 10, 11 & 12: Cappadocia
http://eatingturkey.blogspot.com/2008/07/day-10-11-12-cappadocia.html
Seven Hills: an outsider's view of Istanbul. Tuesday, July 1, 2008. Day 10, 11 and 12: Cappadocia. After the little adventure in the village, we were off to the penultimate place on our journey - the valleys, mountains and cliffs of Cappadocia. The hostel where we stayed, the Kilim Pension, was probably the nicest place we stayed at in all of our journey. The place had a magnificent view of the entire Cappadocia valley:. Uchisar Castle is the mountain jutting out. Our hotel was near the top of it. After ...

From My Shoes | Perspectives on Education
Reflections on GTAATX 2014. December 8, 2014. When I came home from the Google Teacher Academy in Austin last week, I was exhausted, but in a good way. I wanted to write a reflection, but I also wanted to let the experience simmer a bit so that I would write one that was not influenced by the “high” that was GTA. Today, I read posts from fellow GTAATX folks, including a very thoughtful and honest one from Karl Lindgren-Streicher. And a data-filled one that made my science heart leap by Matt Vaudrey.

Teaching Turkey | Sarah Shields and students in Turkey
The students left ten days ago. Out the window of the dining car on the Iç Anadolu Mavi Tren, I can see the same Taurus mountains in which we spent time together. I’m returning to Istanbul from Syria. Since the students left, I’ve been thinking again and again about the summer course, about the students, about the whole project of active learning. I was often confused during the seven week seminar. What is active teaching? Isn’t all teaching active? Or should I not have worried about it to begin with?
