Teaching Physics with Chop Sticks. An American teacher in China. In Defense of (Actual) Science. June 9, 2014. A friend I admire recently wrote about the wonder of the connections between quantum physics and spirituality. He exalted quantum physics as being better than mere science due to its ostensible treatment of the oneness of things. This was contrasted … Continue reading →. How Much Is a Smile Worth? Teaching Physics with Chop Sticks. An American teacher in China. Part 2: The Veritas About Vino. Part 4: Cheese (or if you prefer: Pizza) →. Part 3: Up in Smoke Cigars in China. January 15, 2011. One day when I was first here a Chinese regular at the café I frequent gave me a Cuban Cohiba. I was so excited! Cuban cigar options in Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a totally different story cigar city! The cigar taxes are weird in Hong Kong. Cigars there are pretty expensive, but if you buy cigars mail-order fro...

Teaching Physics with Chop Sticks. An American teacher in China. Part 3: Up in Smoke Cigars in China. How Much Is a Smile Worth? Part 4: Cheese (or if you prefer: Pizza). January 30, 2011. Honestly, I wasn’t sure what the fourth food group was (after coffee, wine, and cigars). But I’ve heard so many friends abroad say “I can’t live without cheese” that I had to go with it. And then if there was any doubt, just thinking about pizza clinched it. Not sure there's any cheese here. So what goes wrong? In a la...

Michael Masterson's Blog. Teaching in New Orleans. Louisiana Philharmonic Hosts Improvising Pianist Gabriela Montero. October 1, 2011. Headlining with Mahler’s first symphony. Even after season tickets to the Chicago Symphony, I’ve learned to appreciate modest professional orchestras in small cities. But I’m here to tell you: this was one of the best symphony concerts I’ve ever heard. Now in its twenty-first season, the LPO performs in Mahalia Jackson Theater. With exuberant admiration. She plays a s...

So it was with delightful anticipation that I attended the poetry reading of Kellogg Community College English professor Elizabeth Kerlikowske Wednesday night at the Kalamazoo Public Library, in celebration of her 55th birthday and the publication of her new book of poetry, “The Shape of Dad.”.
