Demon-haunted world: April 2010
http://demon-hauntedworld.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html
Musings on science, politics, and society from the trenches. Wednesday, April 28, 2010. Scientific American falls prey to denialist memes. The May issue of Scientific American just landed in my mailbox, and an article in the "News Scan" section entitled " IPCC Errors Prompt a Review on Climate Science Data. The opening sentence reads:. OK, fair enough - except that only one of the three predictions were actually "erroneous". The IPCC WG2 report said:. The only "scandal" here is that grey literature was r...

Musings on science, politics, and society from the trenches. Friday, May 13, 2011. Well, it's been several months since my last post - I apologize for the lack of activity around here, but that pesky Ph.D. keeps getting in the way. However, since I'm currently sitting in a workshop on scientific blogging, and one of the requirements is to do a blog post . . . here it is. I'm (temporarily) back in my native hemisphere for the 2nd International Marine Conservation Congress. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Demon-haunted world: Heart to Heart: Polar vs. Suunto
http://demon-hauntedworld.blogspot.com/2010/11/heart-to-heart-polar-vs-suunto.html
Musings on science, politics, and society from the trenches. Thursday, November 11, 2010. Heart to Heart: Polar vs. Suunto. So this post is going to be a change of pace - a brief review/comparison of heart-rate monitors. About ten years ago, I bought a Polar S410. For - if I recall correctly - about $200 on eBay. Although you can still find them on eBay for about $170 or so, this model has since been supplanted by the Polar RS400. If there's anything more frivolous than designing a GPS device that doesn'...

Musings on science, politics, and society from the trenches. Monday, February 15, 2010. Getting a sinking feeling yet? There has been a recent spate of papers regarding the phytoplankton and carbon sequestration. I take a particular interest in this subject, as my undergraduate thesis looked at the effects of iron limitation on oxidative stress responses in diatoms. In this post, I'll attempt to synthesize the findings of these different papers to find the "take-home message", as they say. Of this iron t...
