Technical Jottings: Check a Linux hard disk - command line

http://techblog.vardyfamily.co.uk/2012/06/check-linux-hard-disk-command-line.html

Technical stuff, mostly to remind myself when I forget in a couple of months' time. Friday, 22 June 2012. Check a Linux hard disk - command line. Although checking a ext2/3 disk from the command line is easy, there is surprisingly little concise info out there. Here's what I did when faced with a disk that kept going into read-only mode (which is usually a sign that something is wrong):. Sudo fsck -V -C /dev/sdc1 - -y -f. The options I used are:. Technical Jottings: November 2011

Technical stuff, mostly to remind myself when I forget in a couple of months' time. Tuesday, 22 November 2011. Logitech Media Server and media keys. I use squeezeslave to listen to music. Here's how I set this up on Ubuntu 11.04. Firstly, you need a script to send commands directly to the LMS command line interface. CLI) Luckily someone has written this. The script is called sccmd. And in fact I originally found it on github where someone has a mirror of the code. Secondly, you need to map the keys. ...

Technical stuff, mostly to remind myself when I forget in a couple of months' time. Friday, 23 October 2009. Converting TS files to a DVD. A couple of years ago, we got a Humax PVR9200T. One of its features is a USB socket, from which you can copy recorded programmes onto a computer. They come across as MPEG transmission stream files (*.ts). They can be watched on your computer (good old VLC. But if you want to put them on a playable DVD then a little work is required. However, since I use Ubuntu rather ...

Technical Jottings: "Editing" symlinks on Linux

http://techblog.vardyfamily.co.uk/2013/03/editing-symlinks-on-linux.html

Technical stuff, mostly to remind myself when I forget in a couple of months' time. Wednesday, 6 March 2013. Editing" symlinks on Linux. Firstly, let's be clear. There *is* no way of editing symlinks. All you can do is delete them and recreate them. However, there is a way of automating this process. I had lots of photos on one disk and then moved them. The links to the files needed changing en masse. The answer was readlink. For fn in *.jpg; do. NEWFN=$(readlink $fn sed 's,/media/d1,/media/d2,').

Technical Jottings: July 2012

http://techblog.vardyfamily.co.uk/2012_07_01_archive.html

Technical stuff, mostly to remind myself when I forget in a couple of months' time. Wednesday, 11 July 2012. Updating Debian Squeeze on PogoPlug. There's a nasty little bug. In Debian Squeeze which means that if you update the kernel, IPv6 stops working. The reason this is so annoying for me is that if the networking doesn't work, I can't get into the PogoPlug at all (there is no direct access, not even a serial console). It's effectively bricked. The answer is to run flash-kernel. Links to this post.

Wednesday, March 24, 2010. IPhone HTTP Live Streaming - Between a rock (Microsoft) and a Hard Place (Apple). We were asked by a customer to create a live streaming system for the iPhone. No problem, I know the iPhone 3.x software supports live streaming, and we've worked with streaming video on other platforms before. The trick in creating a HTTP live stream is to correctly create the segments, which should be split on key frame boundaries so the client can put them back to together correctly. This is a ...
